The Season Pentecost
October 11th, 2024
Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend
Father Mark's Musings
“With Gratitude for the Life of…”
I am learning there is a rhythm to our Cathedral life,
and the shift from summer to fall has brought with it
some crisp and colorful events.
First, we are hosting an acolyte, lector, Eucharistic Minister,
and Visitor training session this Sunday, October 13th, right
after the 10:30 service for any existing or new persons in those
ministries. These ministers add so much to the life of our liturgy,
and brushing up on our skills brings us ever closer to God and
each other during our services.
Second, our formation programs have been well attended,
and this Sunday, we will hear from Peter Christensen
in our Adult Forum about Equity in Education. This is
part of our series about issues related to our upcoming
2024 Election. The Sunday School has also had some
new students this fall.
Our new addition is progressing. The old fuel tank has been removed,
and the soil has been tested. Once the results show
it is safe to move forward, work will continue.
Also, the kitchen downstairs is being renewed with new
lighting and fresh paint on the cabinets and the walls.
We started our stewardship season with a letter from Liz,
our senior warden, who discussed the important
reasons for supporting the cathedral and even included flower seeds.
We also had stewardship talks at the 8:00 and 10:30 services
from Chris Jeter and Matthew Diehl, who are helping to lead us
through this important work.
Deacon Anne and Deacon Clay have revived Care and Share,
adding two new members, Al Whitfield and Celeste Hilliard.
These efforts and your generosity have enabled the Cathedral to
contribute to
Episcopal Relief and Development,
supporting those affected by the recent hurricanes.
Looking ahead, we will start gathering names of the departed
on cards that say “With Gratitude for the Life of,”
and place these cards throughout the Cathedral on All Saints Sunday.
I was touched when I read these cards for the first time,
and I thought that the notion of saints is for eternity.
As you pick up one of these cards toward the church entrance
and fill it out with one loved one’s name, please know
that our life at Saint James is here because of all of us,
those who have gone before us, and those who are here today.
That said, With Gratitude for the life of you.
Acolytes, Lectors, and Eucharistic Ministers/Visitors

We are holding a training/renewal session for all lectors, acolytes, and eucharistic
ministers/visitors on
October 13th, following the 10:30 am service.

The upgrades on the kitchen in Cathedral Hall continued this week.
Here, we see painters (Matthew and Mariah Worns,
Kirk Philippsen, and Al Whitfield). The interior of the cabinets is
mainly finished, and they are beginning to paint the walls.

Care & Share is active once again!
Care & Share was a community outreach project of the Cathedral
many years ago and was not active in its mission until recently.
You all have continued to support Care & Share, and we gratefully
have enough funds to support Hurricane Relief
in Florida and N. Carolina. Those funds are on their way for hurricane relief efforts through
Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD).
Over the next three weeks, through 27 October 2024, we will continue to
collect & send funds to ERD for Hurricane Relief efforts.
If writing a check, please note in the memo line the funds
are for ERD/Hurricane Relief. If sending cash, please use
the blue envelopes in the back of the church
marked Share & Care. We plan to send more funds
to ERD in early November.
Deacons Anne and Clay are working with Al Whitfield and Celeste Hilliard
to disperse funds received for
Care & Share to our local community
and national relief needs. If you have suggestions,
please contact one of our Deacons.
