The Season Pentecost
October 18th, 2024
Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend
Father Mark's Musings
Election Day is eighteen days away, and early voting in Indiana began on October 8th. Several people I speak with, both parishioners and those in South Bend, express anxiety over this particular election. I feel it myself.
This is a consequential election, not only for our country but also for the planet.
As a church, and in particular as a 501(c)(3) organization, we cannot promote particular candidates officially, but we do promote values and policies that express love of neighbor, welcome of the stranger, care for the earth and concern for the common good-based in core commitments that Christians share with others of many faith traditions.
The church at large does urge participation in our common life- notably voting. The work of the Episcopal Public Policy Network (link), in particular, demonstrates this. For me, this is an antidote to anxiety and a way to connect with others in the practice of democracy and community care.
Here at The Cathedral, we are having adult forums related to the 2024 Election topics. Carl Hetler, the Homeless Coordinator for the City of South Bend, spoke about The Housing Crisis. Peter Christensen presented on Education Equity. This Sunday, Hal Culbertson will discuss the Ethics of Immigration. On October 27th, Olubunmi Okanlami will explore Health Care.
Last Tuesday, some of us participated in a webinar the Diocese of New York offered on Christian nationalism based on a new report from the House of Bishops Theology Committee. We had the opportunity to reflect on the dangers and distortions Christian nationalism poses to our faith and politics and what a healthier relationship between faith and politics looks like.
Finally, we are invited to Join Bishop Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, Diocese of Indianapolis, and Bishop Doug Sparks, Diocese of Northern Indiana, online for a Pre-Election Prayer Service on November 4th at 7:00 pm ET.

I conclude with this prayer from Bishop Deon Johnson of Missouri, which touched me this week, and I will be praying it in the weeks to come. I hope it speaks to you as well.
O God, grant us a vision of your world
as your love would have it;
a world where the lowly are lifted up,
the weak protected,
the hungry fed,
the oppressed are freed,
and the divisions among us healed.
Give us the inspiration and courage
to build a world of justice and truth,
a world where the riches of creation are shared
and all are named, claimed, and called beloved;
through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen
Can you dig it? Yes, we can!
Construction resumed yesterday on the new addition! Prayers have been answered, and progress is in motion.
