Father Mark's Musings
And the children will lead them...
"In Episcopal congregations, Sunday school is primarily for children, and churches with more children are more likely to grow." Facts on Episcopal Church Growth and Decline, Hadaway, (2015), pg. 29
On Sundays at 9:15 a.m., we have three formation programs running simultaneously. Last Sunday, I introduced Mother Tina, who gave a wonderful presentation about her journey of ordination to the adult forum. I had the opportunity to teach Storymakers (for children in grades 3-6) with Rhonda Culbertson. In the next room, Christopher Hillak and Kim Gray guided Growing In Our Worship (for children ages 3 through 2nd grade).
The encouraging news is that we had a couple of new children in both classes, and amazing volunteers are teaching them. The challenging news is that we really need more teachers for our Sunday School programs.
I cited the quote above, "...churches with more children are more likely to grow..." from a publication of The Episcopal Church to emphasize the importance of maintaining and possibly growing programs for children in order to reach out to any of you who might be willing to work with our already skilled teachers, and offer our children some educational opportunities on Sunday mornings. If you are interested in helping (we need your help) please get in touch with me at: formation@stjamessouthbend.org
Blessings for our future,
Fr. Mark

Adult Forum: Deacon Anne

Speaking of children, we have a Finnegan update: Yesterday, Christopher and Andrew Hillak received a phone call from their lawyer to inform them that the court clerk in North Carolina had just signed off on their adoption of Finnegan, and she is officially theirs. They could neither be happier nor could they stop the tears of joy. Congratulations to the happy family!
The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City is sponsoring in preparation for the election webinars from four significant Episcopal speakers who will examine key election issues in light of our Church’s official positions. The webinars will be held on Wednesdays at 4:00pm and will then be available on YouTube. Because we will look at the topics through the lens of General Convention resolutions rather than the platforms of partisan politics, we hope these webinars will be good conversation starters in congregations even across political divides. We have been invited to attend these webinars, and during October, The Cathedral of St. James, South Bend will discuss topics related to the upcoming election in our adult forums.
