The Season after Pentecost
August 30th, 2024
Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend

On this Labor Day Weekend, I thought looking at some of the labor happening at the Cathedral would be a good idea. We have an in-house group with various nicknames: CSJ Craftsmen, Carpentry Group, or, my favorite, Matthew and the 4 Retirees. This group consists of Mike McCray, Kirk Philippsen, Rick Hilliard, Dave Woods, and Matthew Worns.

If you have not seen them in action, they are replacing aging cabinet doors and drawers in the Cathedral Hall Kitchen. They are also replacing the lighting and floor in the kitchen area. This will help make that area more usable, especially when the new elevator is in place.

The carpentry group has built storage space in the hallway, added a buffet table currently used in the hospitality area and done an amazing job with the vesting area and the sacristy. The carpentry group has been supplying much of the carpentry work but also works with the Kitchen & Great Hall Subcommittee, the Building Committee, and the Cathedral Chapter.

The following are some photos of their labors.  On this Labor Day weekend, we give thanks for all they do.

The Collect for Labor Day:

Almighty God, you have so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Kickoff Cookout September 8th after the 10:30 am Eucharist

We are kicking off the new season at the Cathedral with a cookout on September 8th after the 10:30 am Eucharist.
It would be helpful if you could bring sides, salads, and desserts in a covered dish. Please feel free to bring what you can.
The Cathedral will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, lemonade, and ice.  Plates, napkins, cups, and plastic ware will also be provided.

Tables will be provided beneath tents.  You should bring your own folding chairs and beverages if you want something other than lemonade.

Kirk Philipsen and Rick Hilliard will be handling the cooking and set-up. If you are interested in joining them, call Rick at (574) 514-9818. They need your help.

Children's Formation begins again on September 15th

Over the summer, our children's formation takes a pause, but we are looking forward to resuming those activities Sunday, September 15th at 9:15 am.  Stay tuned for more information on children's activities for the 24-25 school year.  If you would like to join the email list specific to parents/guardians of children, please email Fr.
