The Season after Pentecost

August 9th, 2024
Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend

Father Mark's Musings

"Oh God, our help in ages past..."

This week, I was looking at some bulletins in Cathedral House from 1905 that were waiting to be archived. The bulletin titles were simply St. James Bulletin. Under the masthead was a quote from the Book of Isaiah: "In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength."

Because of the "quiet confidence" quote, I started wondering what was happening at St. James, South Bend, and the world in 1905 that would make a Rector want to convey that message in every bulletin that year. So, I did a little research and discovered the following about 1905.

St. James was a parish, not a cathedral, at that time.
The rector was The Rev. Francis Milton Banfil, who lived at 727 West Washington Street.
At that time, there was no Diocese of Northern Indiana; instead, St. James was part of the Diocese of Michigan City.
The Mayor of South Bend was Edward J. Fogarty, who was most concerned with building better roads because more people were beginning to purchase automobiles.  In fact, Studebaker cars were originally electric vehicles in 1902, but they made the transition to gas in 1904.
Theodore Roosevelt was the President of the United States at that time and was known for his progressive reforms, such as establishing national parks and forests.
Albert Einstein proposed his Theory of Relativity in 1905, which has since shaped our understanding of space, time, and motion.

With all of that going on in 1905, I can see why the message the rector wanted to send to the parishioners of St. James was one of having "quiet confidence."  Maybe we can learn something today from those who graced St. James in ages past.

Welcome Back Sunday

Although we have a few more weeks of summer left before you know it, Labor Day will be upon us and fall not far behind.  Our program season begins in earnest the Sunday after Labor Day, that is, Sunday, September 8th.  If you are serving in some way as an acolyte, lector, lay minister, formation team, usher, hospitality, counter, folder, or any other way, we hope that the summer has given you some time for restoration, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the various ministries at St. James.  If you are not part of a service team, we sure could use your help. We will offer an opportunity for new members to sign up on Welcome Back Sunday if you feel called to serve at the Cathedral this fall.
