"I love bread!"
In 2016, Oprah Winfrey launched a commercial for Weight Watchers and told the world, “I love bread!” And who could blame her? With the aroma of freshly baked bread, the various types: multigrain, rye, sourdough, and white, and the ways we dip it, put spreads on it, and make sandwiches from it, bread is an important part of many meals.
Our Lectionary offers us bread in John’s Gospel for five weeks this summer. Jesus feeds the five thousand, says that he is the bread of life that came down from heaven, and promises that those who eat the bread he offers will live forever.
During this season of bread, I began thinking about the communion bread we serve here at St. James. Did you know that our very own Deacon Anne bakes the bread we offer for communion? In a short Q&A interview, I asked Deacon Anne some questions about this unique bread-baking ministry.
Q. How long have you been baking the communion bread?
A. I received the Communion Bread recipe in March of 2008 from Nancy Demler (Daniel Demler, Sr’s wife). Nancy had been making the bread from a recipe she was given by the cook/chef at St. Gregory’s Abbey in Three Rivers, MI. I started out as a ‘back-up’ baker for Nancy only. She had been making the Communion Bread as her offering to the church for many years. Dan & her daughter, Julie) know more of those details.
Q. Does anyone else bake it as well?
A. Steve (Dr. Wiestock) makes the bread when I am unable to make it. This is our gift to the church.
Q. What are the ingredients? Is there a secret ingredient or anything special about the recipe?
A. The ingredients are simple: water, yeast, honey, salt, olive oil, and ground whole wheat flour. There are no eggs or milk. There is no secret ingredient; the only thing special about the recipe is that it is made by hand.
Q. What calls you to do this, or why do you enjoy it?
A. It is our gift to the church; Steve & I like to bake.
Q. Any special inspirational motivation that you have that adds to this special ministry?
A. We like having real bread for Communion, just as Jesus shared with his disciples & friends.
Thank you, Deacon Anne.
Fr. Mark
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39)
As many of you already have done, I’ve spent this past week walking through the last days of a parent’s life — my Dad’s, in this case — and the first few days without him. It has been such an intense and important experience that I will be unpacking it for some time yet.
I look forward to seeing you in person again soon, but I did want to give you an update on our construction project, as promised!
A couple of weeks ago, I shared that the City's Engineers asked us to make some updates to our site and drawings, and then to have our updates reviewed and stamped by a separate Civil Engineer before re-submitting them.. This step took us a bit longer than expected due to a shortage of local engineers, which was further complicated by illnesses and vacations. However, our architect, Joe Dzierla, has just let me know that our new civil engineering hero, Dan Yerks, has just sealed and re-submitted our drawings to the City on Monday of this week for final review and approval.
Meanwhile, we continue making progress in the rest of our building, especially in the kitchen, where the labor and most of the materials are being donated directly by our own, in-house carpenters. Our other capital planning committees have also begun to meet, preparing what comes next in the kitchen, Cathedral Hall, Landscape, and Worship Spaces. It will be fun to see all that is yet to come with these projects!
In Peace,
Liz Burman, Senior Warden
