The Season after Pentecost
August 2nd, 2024
Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend
Father Mark's Musings
August & The Sunday Scaries
When I was growing up, and even as recently as last year when I was a chaplain, teacher, and advisor in an Episcopal school, I found this time of the year one of denial and excitement: denial in refusing to acknowledge the back-to-school ads and the end of a lengthy summer break, and excitement over the possibilities that a new school year will bring. I enter this August with a sense of both a bit of denial that Fr. Brian is finally on a much-deserved sabbatical and definite excitement to enter August with all the possibilities that The Cathedral of Saint James brings to all of us who worship here.
This August, I am following the advice that I gave to my students in years past about tackling what we called “The Sunday Scaries,” the feeling of anxiety of not being prepared enough for the week ahead. For my students, this usually involved an unwritten paper, the exam that could always use a little more preparation, and for Juniors and Seniors, college application deadlines. I generally would encourage my students to do some journaling, guided meditation, or prayer and do something practical with their families, like helping them make dinner or cleaning up so they are not isolated in front of their computers or phone screens. I also shared this advice with their parents.
I have enjoyed meeting several of you after our Friday and Sunday services in July or in the office during the week, and I look forward to getting to know more of the congregation on our journey together. I also recall when I was a student here long ago, that Autumn, cooler temperatures, and the changing of the leaves in South Bend were gorgeous. As seasons change and we grow in our faith, may we welcome all that August has to offer and kiss those Sunday scaries goodbye.
Adult Forum in September
Last week on Tuesday the conference room was packed with viewers of the film, The Philadelphia Eleven. As Fr. Brian mentioned in last week’s econnections, this documentary reviewed the eleven well-qualified women who were ordained to the priesthood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in defiance of the canons of the Episcopal Church at the time and over the objections of many Episcopal bishops, priests and lay persons.
In our September Adult Forum, we will hear from some of the women who are living their faith as ordained persons in the Diocese of Northern Indiana. After Labor Day, we will hear from Mother Tina Velthuizen, Deacon Anne Wietstock, and Canon Terri Bays about their faith journeys.
Future Adult Forum Ideas
The summertime Adult Forum Storytelling Series LGTQ+ Voices was well received with terrific participation, and stories of courage, growth and hope. Some ideas for future Adult Forums that have been proposed are:
Women’s Spirituality: Various speakers talk about their journey of faith in honor of the 50th Anniversary of Women’s Ordination in the Episcopal Church
Election Year Ethics: A non-partisan discussion about where the church stands on some of the hot button political issues
The Cathedral of Saint James History: Learning more about the past of Saint James and how it has shaped where we are today
Sounds of the Season: An historical discussion about the hymns and music we hear during various times of the year, and how it informs our worship.
War: We pray for peace, but do we have an understanding about the current wars in the Middle East, Russia/Ukraine, as well as lesser discussed wars like South Sudan, Yemen and other regions. Can there be a Just War? What can we do to bring peace?
Other ideas? Do you have an idea for an Adult Forum topic or discussion? If so, contact Fr. Mark either in person or through email at: formation@stjamessouthbend.org
Bits & Pieces
Contact Information. Father Mark can be reached at the following email address:
formation@stjamessouthbend.org or at (574) 232-4837, ext. 1006. During Fr. Brian’s
sabbatical, he will be available for routine matters during Cathedral Office Hours, or as needed for a pastoral emergency.
Database Updates. Joe Anand-Obleton is updating our parish database. We are often missing dates-birth, anniversary, baptism, confirmation, etc-so if you have not done so already, please check with Joe to make sure the information we have on file is current, complete, and correct. You can email Joe at office@stjamessouthbend.org
Communion by Extension. Nan Noecker will serve as the Designated Eucharistic Visitor this Sunday morning at Saint John of the Cross in Bristol, offering Holy Communion from the Cathedral altar that was consecrated for this purpose at our Friday Noon Eucharist. Thank you, Nan, for sharing this Sacramental ministry with our friends at St. John of the Cross!
And finally…The Retirees are continuing their rehab work on the cabinets in the Cathedral kitchen. The plan is to reface the existing cabinets, paint the interiors, and replace the hardware. As Fr. Brian mentioned last week, removing the old linoleum from beneath the kitchen sink is already a dramatic improvement.
