The Season after Pentecost

July 26, 2024
Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend

The Dean's List

Film: The Philadelphia Eleven
On July 29, 1974, eleven well-qualified women were ordained to the priesthood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This courageous act of obedience to the call of Christ upon their lives was done in defiance of the canons of the Episcopal Church at that time and over the objections of many Episcopal bishops, priest, and lay persons. The ordination of the Philadelphia Eleven served as a catalyst for canonical changes adopted by the General Convention in 1976 which allowed for a local option for the ordination of women.

A documentary about the Philadelphia Eleven has been produced in celebration of the 50th anniversary of this pivotal moment in the history of the Episcopal Church. A free screening will take place at the Cathedral of Saint James this coming Tuesday, July 30, at 7 pm in the Conference Room (we'll bring in more comfortable chairs for the occasion). Please join us!

Sabbatical
What makes my heart sing? That was the guiding rubric in the Clergy Renewal Grant application process that I - with the indispensable help of a few others - undertook late in 2022. By the time we sent the application portfolio off for the consideration of the grant committee at Christian Theological Seminary, we had homed in on The Spirituality of Story & Song as a Foundation for Renewal as the unifying theme for this sabbatical time. The proposal was to take time to do a deeper dive into music theory, including writing and performance, fulfill a bucket-list desire to walk the entire Camino Frances, attend a storytelling festival, and revisit several important places from previous travels in Scotland, this time with my entire family. On the Cathedral side, our hope is to develop storytelling skills and provide opportunities for significant sharing as a means of building community and to explore how story and song together can draw us closer to Christ and one another. Just about eleven months ago I received news that the Cathedral had been awarded a grant of just under $60,000 to go forward with this plan.

And here we are. This time next week I will be at the Dublin Irish Music Festival in Dublin, Ohio, not only taking in some lively and fun music, but listening to the stories told in and around the music and - as opportunities present themselves - talking to people about how music and stories and a festival atmosphere impacts their spirit.  At the same time, the Cathedral community embarks on a four-month journey under the leadership of Senior Warden Liz Burman and Priest-in-Residence Fr. Mark Hummell through what promises to be an interesting moment in our history as construction begins and a new focus and energy on Christian formation for all ages commences. One of the greatest blessings in my life right now is my confidence in knowing that the Cathedral will be in very good hands while I'm gone.

A special Sabbatical edition of eConnections is still to come, with information about my itinerary, how to follow along (if you wish), and what to expect at the Cathedral while I am away. I will preach and preside at the Cathedral this coming Sunday one more time before heading off, so - hopefully - I will see you there.

Bits & Bobs
Database Updates.
One more time... Joe Anand-Obleton will be at the back of the church following services this coming Sunday to update our parish database. We are often missing dates - birth, anniversary, baptism, confirmation, etc - so if you have not done so already, please check with Joe to make sure the information we have on file is current, complete, and correct. You can also email Joe to inquire at office@stjamessouthbend.org

New Happenings Summer Camp. This summer camp program for children whose parents (one or both) are incarcerated concludes tomorrow at Camp Alexander Mack in Milford. Please keep children and camp leaders alike in your prayers they come to the end of their time together.

Communion by Extension. Nan Noecker will serve as the Designated Eucharistic Visitor this Sunday morning at St. Paul's Church, Mishawaka, offering Holy Communion from the Cathedral altar that was consecrated for this purpose at our Friday Noon Eucharist. Thank you, Nan, for sharing this Sacramental ministry with our friends at St. Paul's!

And, finally... The Retirees have begun rehab work on the cabinets in the Cathedral kitchen. The plan is to reface the existing cabinets, paint the interiors, and replace the hardware. Removing the old linoleum from beneath the kitchen sink is already a dramatic improvement :)

Blessings,
Brian
