Saint James Sunday
July 21, 2024

Tomorrow the Cathedral celebrates our patronal feast - Saint James the Greater - with a full day of fun and interesting stuff. Here's what's happening:

Capital Campaign Wrap-Up. Saint James Sunday marks the conclusion of the active phase of the Gather & Grow campaign. At the Offertory during both services, members of the campaign team will offer thanks to God and to you, provide a brief synopsis of progress on both our fundraising and building efforts, and outline next steps in our mission to open wide our doors, renew our worship and gathering spaces, and continually transform our community through a spirit of hospitality.

Storytelling. Our LGBTQ+ Voices Storytelling Series continues at 9:15 am tomorrow in Cathedral Hall. Trice Berkley and Christopher Hillak will share from their very different generational perspectives and experiences of family acceptance and support.

Can't be there in person? Join us via Zoom. Here is the link for Sunday's meeting.

On Sunday, July 28, we round out this series with stories from Michael & Joe Anand-Obleton and Catherine Craker.

Baseball. All forty tickets have been claimed for the Cathedral's Baseball Extravaganza down the street at Four Winds Field.

Still need to pay for tickets? You can use your credit/debit care through Givelify any time, use a credit/debit card on the Square app on Fr. Brian or Joe Anand-Obleton's phone, or give cash or a check to Joe tomorrow morning. Tickets are $32 each. If paying by credit/debit, please consider adding $1 per ticket to cover administrative fees.

Other Things

Grace & Gratitude. Dave Miller's requiem Eucharist, Committal service, and reception this morning were lovely. Thank you so much to Alice and to all who helped with set-up and hospitality.

Database Updates. Joe Anand-Obleton will be at the back of the church following services over the next few Sundays to update our parish database. Please feel free to check with him to make sure the information we have on file is current and correct. You can also email Joe to inquire at office@stjamessouthbend.org

New Happenings Summer Camp. This summer camp program for children whose parents (one or both) are incarcerated begins tomorrow at Camp Alexander Mack in Milford. Please keep children and camp leaders alike in your prayers as they commit to this extraordinary work together.

Parking Lot Closure. Our North Parking Lot on Lafayette Boulevard will be closed this coming Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, July 23-25. St. Margaret's House is pitching a big top in the lot for their annual Summer Picnic.

Communion by Extension. Cynthia Katsarelis will serve as the Designated Eucharistic Visitor tomorrow morning at St. Paul's Church, Mishawaka, offering Holy Communion from the Cathedral altar that was consecrated for this purpose on Friday at our Noon Eucharist. Communion by Extension is a relatively new practice in Northern Indiana that allows one congregation to extend its altar to another as a matter of deep Eucharistic hospitality and Christian fellowship. Thank you, Cynthia, for sharing this Sacramental ministry with our friends at St. Paul's!

And, finally... Among those in attendance at Dave Miller's funeral today was Ms. Nancy Truex, who was married in the former Chapel of the Holy Angels at Saint James on January 24, 1951. Upon learning this, Kirk Philippsen and I went to the archives to see if we could locate her marriage record in the parish register.

It is a wondrous, holy thing to witness someone touch a page in a book wherein the names of dearly loved ones were inscribed by their own hands on a day that is still vivid in memory. Mr. & Mrs. Truex had been married for over 72 1/2 years at the time of her husband's death in September 2023.

Blessings,
Brian
