The Season after Pentecost

July 13, 2024
Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend

The Dean's List

Fr. Mark Hummell preaches his inaugural Cathedral sermon tomorrow. Come on down, whether in person or online, to hear a new voice, listen for the Spirit, and show your encouragement and support.

Distribution of SOTB Proceeds. Proceeds from this year's Shortcakes on the Blacktop strawberry festival will be given to this year's recipients during announcements at the 10:30 service tomorrow morning: Sunday, July 14. Please join us in giving thanks for the amazing ministries of St. Margaret's House, Clubhouse of St. Joseph County, and New Happenings Ministries. Each ministry will receive a check for $4,669.84. Nice work, Cathedral!

Capital Campaign through Saint James Sunday. We will celebrate the conclusion of the active phase of the Gather & Grow campaign next Sunday - July 21 - as part of our celebration of St. James Sunday. If you have not already given or pledged to the important work of Gather & Grow, we ask your prayerful consideration of financial support.

If you would like to discuss your gift or pledge personally with Fr. Brian or any other member of the Gather & Grow capital campaign team, please send an email to me here or fill out a meeting request card located in the pew racks.

Also - just to be clear - the conclusion of the active phase of the Gather & Grow capital campaign does not mean we won't receive gifts or pledges after that date. Generosity knows no bounds.

Database Updates. Joe Anand-Obleton will be at the back of the church following services over the next few Sundays to update our parish database. Please feel free to check with him to make sure the information we have on file is current and correct. You can also email Joe to inquire at office@stjamessouthbend.org

Baseball. There is ONE ticket left for the Cathedral's outing to see the South Bend Cubs vs. Quad Cities River Bandits on Saint James Sunday, July 21 at 2:05 pm. To reserve it, send an email to Fr. Brian with your name or sign up on the list on the back table at the church tomorrow morning :)

Got tickets? Please pay for tickets on or before July 21 online through Givelify or in person by cash in an envelope marked Baseball Tickets or write a check to the Cathedral of Saint James with Baseball Tickets in the memo line. Tickets are $32 each. If paying online, please consider adding $1 per ticket to cover administrative fees. Reduced cost tickets are available; just ask Fr. Brian.

Storytelling. First of all, a big THANK YOU to Cindy Laney and Scott Peters for a stellar beginning to our July storytelling series. What a gift to all who were blessed to be in the room last Sunday.

Continuing through July, the Sunday morning Adult Forum will feature LGBTQ+ Voices from the Cathedral community sharing their stories of sorrow and struggle, joy, triumph, and love. Come hear from those who are near and dear to us at 9:15 am each Sunday. Attendance at last week's forum is prompting a change of venue to Cathedral Hall. This week: Shela Raman McCabe and Pat McCabe will talk about their experiences coming out as married adults and how they navigated it and Chris Gibson will share from his journey in life.

Can't be there in person? Join us via Zoom. Here is the link for Sunday's meeting.

Sabbatical. As most people are aware - hopefully - I will be away from the Cathedral for a full sabbatical leave beginning Thursday, August 1 and returning Wednesday, December 4. This is a wonderful opportunity for both the Cathedral community and me to immerse ourselves in questions and possibilities around The Spirituality of Story and Song. I am planning to send an eConnections Extra devoted solely to this time that not only outlines my itinerary, but gives practical information about Cathedral life while I am away. Stay tuned!

Blessings,
Brian

Can you help with the reception following Dave Miller's funeral? Betsy VanderBurg is looking for food contributions and helping hands for set-up, serving, and clean-up. Please contact her via email or in-person to let her know you are willing to lend a hand.
