Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend

on the Weekend of the Sixth Sunday of Easter

The Dean's List

Labyrinth Workshop This Sunday
Dr. Catherine Craker will lead a labyrinth workshop for all ages and abilities this Sunday, May 5, during formation hour from 9:15 am - 10:15 am. Meet in the Butterfly Garden to learn about and experience this contemplative, kinetic prayer form.

Sunday Morning Formation

As we enter the month of May, our program year is winding down. Here's what's happening:

  • Growing in Our Worship and Story Makers will conclude on Sunday, May 19.

  • Youth Group meets for the last time before their summer hiatus this coming Sunday, May 5. Abby McManus is our lone high school graduate this year.

  • Adult Forum will continue through June with the exception of Memorial Day Weekend, Sunday, May 26.

Summer Camp
Registration is currently open for Northern Indiana Summer Camp, which will take place at Camp Mack in Milford from June 9 -15. Summer Camp is a phenomenal experience of friendship, worship, fun, and - apparently this year - food! Summer Camp is open to children and teens who will be entering 3rd through 9th grade in the fall. Financial assistance is available for Cathedral members as needed. Follow this link to the Summer Camp website.

Ascension Day: May 9
Ascension Day is coming up this Thursday. Celebrate with the Cathedral community at sung vespers led by Dr. Steven Wietstock and the Cathedral Choir beginning at 7 pm on Thursday, May 9. Come, celebrate Ascension Day!

Celebrating Julian of Norwich
The feast of Julian of Norwich - winner of this year's Lent Madness Golden Halo! - falls on Wednesday, May 8. We will celebrate this extraordinary mystic and theologian both at Evening Prayer on May 8 at 5 pm and again on Friday, May 10 at the Noon Eucharist. Canon Tina Velthuizen will lead a one-hour conversation on Julian's life and work following Evening Prayer on Wednesday.

Let us pray.

"See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation!
We are putting no obstacles in anyone's way."
2 Corinthians 6:2b-3a

Lord Jesus, you promised that wherever we gather in your name, you will surely be in our midst: Give us, we humbly ask, the will and the way to open fully the Cathedral of Saint James to all who would enter here that we, gathered in your presence, may continually grow in faith, hope, and love, and be moved by your Holy Spirit to carry on your work in the world around us; in your most holy Name we pray. Amen.

Check out the Summer Camp website here.

Canon Tina Velthuizen invites you to stay for an hour or so after Evening Prayer on Wednesday, May 8, to learn more about the life and teachings of this extraordinary saint of God. The group will gather in the Conference Room.
