Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend
on the Weekend of the Fifth Sunday of Easter

Ascension Day: May 9
The next major event in our annual retelling of the story of Jesus is Ascension Day, which occurs 40 days after Easter Sunday each year (so always on a Thursday). The story of Jesus' ascension is found in the opening verses of the Acts of the Apostles when Jesus gives his ministry over to his followers, telling them they will receive power from the Holy Spirit. This is fundamentally important to the Christian community in two ways: 1) Jesus has been received into heaven - the dwelling place of God - and thus is fully alive; and 2) Jesus' work is now clearly, distinctly, and unequivocally our work.
Unfortunately, I will be at a two-day conference in Chicago that I can't get back from in time for an evening service, so let's get creative. The Cathedral will celebrate Ascension Day with sung vespers led by Dr. Steven Wietstock and the Cathedral Choir beginning at 7 pm on Thursday, May 9. Come, celebrate Ascension Day!
Julian of Norwich
The feast of Julian of Norwich - winner of this year's Lent Madness Golden Halo! - falls on Wednesday, May 8. We will celebrant this extraordinary mystic and theologian both at Evening Prayer on May 8 at 5 pm and again on Friday, May 10 at the Noon Eucharist.
The Cathedral of Saint James stepped up Big Time for the Big Provincial Gathering! Thank you so much to all who directed people to parking lots, workshops, and restaurants, all who provided child care, all who helped with technology and worship, all who provided housing for out-of-town guests, and all who worked before and after hours to set-up and clean up. What a gift of warm and wonderful hospitality to our beloved Episcopal Church!
Nap time.
Blessings,
Brian
Let us pray.
"See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation!
We are putting no obstacles in anyone's way."
2 Corinthians 6:2b-3a
Lord Jesus, you promised that wherever we gather in your name, you will surely be in our midst: Give us, we humbly ask, the will and the way to open fully the Cathedral of Saint James to all who would enter here that we, gathered in your presence, may continually grow in faith, hope, and love, and be moved by your Holy Spirit to carry on your work in the world around us; in your most holy Name we pray. Amen.
