Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend
on the Weekend of the Fourth Sunday of Easter
The Dean's List
Come do this tomorrow morning! Yes, it will be around 42 degrees at 9:15 am, but at least it will be sunny! Also, we'll play the indoors/outdoors part by ear.
The Irons in the Fire
1. Big Provincial Gathering
The Province V BPG rolls into town this week, setting up at the Cathedral of Saint James on Wednesday, April 24 and Thursday April 25 with some pre-event trainings, meetings, and a Thursday evening reception with Bishop Sparks. The official Big Provincial Gathering actually begins on Friday, April 26 at 6 pm and continues through the early afternoon on Saturday, April 27 with worship and workshops scheduled at the Cathedral, St. Margaret's House, and First Presbyterian Church.
If you would like to attend the BPG as a participant, registration is still open. Click here to go to the BPG webpage.
If you are able to volunteer to help the Cathedral put our best foot forward with hospitality and parking on Thursday, Friday, and/or Saturday, please contact me here. Take a look at the BPG schedule below to see what days and times might work for you. Volunteers should also register at the link above but do not need to pay the fee. Meals will be provided for volunteers, not to mention our undying gratitude.
If you are Safe Church trained and we have a background check on file for you, we are still in need of child care workers (which is a paid position). There are three five-hour shifts available: Friday from 11 am - 4 pm and/or 4 pm - 9 pm; and Saturday from 8 am - 1 pm. If you are available and interested, please contact me asap.
2. Gather & Grow
The elevator addition aspect of the Gather & Grow building project is currently in the hands of our architect and builder. We expect to review and decide on bids from subcontractors soon, the most important of which is choosing whose elevator to use. As you might expect, the building is essentially built to spec around the elevator, so that is the first thing we have to choose.
The Gather & Grow capital campaign is putting the finishing touches on campaign materials - including a website and brochure - in anticipation of the general campaign beginning on Sunday, May 19. Watch for more information coming soon!
3. Shortcakes on the Blacktop
The 2024 Strawberry Festival is on the calendar for Thursday, June 6. In the meantime, there is publicity, order-taking, mixing, baking, strawberry washing, strawberry slicing, signage, and set-up to be done! A full schedule of berry merriment is soon to come.
We say it every year, but it cannot be overstated: There are two things the Cathedral of Saint James is known for in the broader community. 1) We are that church in front of St. Margaret's House; and 2) the church that makes the strawberry shortcakes. People look forward to this delicious outreach every year! It is also one of the easiest and best ways to get involved in the life and work of the Cathedral community and build relationships within the church.
So watch for more news and please sign up to lend a hand!
Blessings,
Brian

Let us pray.
"See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation!
We are putting no obstacles in anyone's way."
2 Corinthians 6:2b-3a
Lord Jesus, you promised that wherever we gather in your name, you will surely be in our midst: Give us, we humbly ask, the will and the way to open fully the Cathedral of Saint James to all who would enter here that we, gathered in your presence, may continually grow in faith, hope, and love, and be moved by your Holy Spirit to carry on your work in the world around us; in your most holy Name we pray. Amen.
