Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend

The new range, convection oven, dishwasher, and garbage disposal for the Cathedral kitchen arrived this past Monday. There were, however, a few issues - namely a few necessary parts that we didn't know we needed and had to order before installation can be completed. Once we have those in hand, we will call back our plumber and electrician to finish the job. We will soon convene a panel of Cathedral kitchen users to help us think through what else needs to happen in the kitchen renovation, which includes emptying a lot of drawers and cabinets and restocking with good, new equipment that is useful to our needs and purposes.

Two Receptions
By virtue of being a Cathedral, one of our principal roles as a congregation is to offer hospitality to broader communities of which we are part. Sometimes they stack up a bit. The Cathedral is hosting two receptions in the span of eight days: the first following the service for the Blessing of Oils on Saturday, March 23; the second is the Easter Feast following the Great Vigil of Easter on Saturday, March 30. Betsy VanderBurg is convening a team and collecting contributions of hors d'oeuvres / crudites / finger-foods / utensil-free desserts to feed an estimated forty people at the reception on the 23rd. Betsy is also convening a team for the 30th, with Tamisyn Grantz leading the effort to gather contributions of sweet or savory finger-foods with each person contribution enough to feed 10 to 12 people. Here are links to sign up for either or both:

Palm Sunday Liturgy of the Palms
The Sunday of the Passion, better known as Palm Sunday, begins with the blessing of branches of palm followed by a procession into (or around) the worship space in imitation of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. At the Cathedral's 8 am service we keep this pretty simple, gathering in the back of the church for the Liturgy of the Palms and then processing straight to our respective seats. At 10:30, however, it has been our custom for quite a few years - 30+ at this point? - to meet our friends from St. Patrick & St. Hedwig Parish at the corner of West Washington and South Taylor Streets to share in blessing the palms. We are pleased and honored to continue our tradition this year (weather permitting, of course).

The Liturgy of the Palms will begin at the corner of West Washington & South Taylor Streets at 10:10 am on Sunday, March 24. At the conclusion of this brief liturgy, each congregation will be led by a crucifer to our respective houses of worship. With any luck, we should be arriving at the Cathedral and processing in to All Glory, Laud, and Honor right around 10:30 am.

Given the limited time between services, rather than trying to squeeze in our regular Christian formation offerings, let's gather in Cathedral Hall at 9:15 am to make palm crosses to present to those joining us from St. Patrick & St. Hedwig as gestures of faith and friendship.

Sunday Adult Forum: Wholehearted Faith
Rachel Held Evans with Jeff Chu

Rachel Held Evans was working on the manuscript for what would become Wholehearted Faith when she fell ill and died in the Spring of 2019. She was just 37 years old. At the request of her husband, Dan, author and editor Jeff Chu completed her final work, which was released in October of 2022. Over the next several weeks, we will listen to audio excerpts from this book at the beginning of adult forum and then discuss what we have heard. The schedule is going to be a little stop/start for several weeks, but it will give anyone who wishes to read the book an opportunity to do so in advance of our discussions. Here is the proposed schedule through April:

March 17: Prologue
March 24: Palm Cross Making before the Liturgy of the Palms
March 31: Easter Sunday: No Adult Forum
April 7: Chapter 1
April 14: Chapter 2
April 21: Earth Day Breakfast in the Butterfly Garden
April 28: Chapter 3

Blessings,
Brian
