Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend
There are two Gather & Grow teams: The Project Team, which is responsible for the physical aspects of the building and renovation project, and the Capital Campaign Team, which is responsible for raising the funds to pay for whatever the Project Team dreams up. The Project Team meets tonight (Friday, March 8) to hone and prioritize the list of included projects that fall under the umbrella of the three main categories: 1) the elevator addition; 2) worship space upgrades; and 3) kitchen & Cathedral hall renovations.
Our architect, Joe Dzierla, will complete construction documents for the elevator addition by the end of March. Liz Burman and I recently met with Mr. Dzierla and a representative from Majority Builders (whom we worked with before) to discuss a proposal to have Majority - rather than our architect - manage the bid process. Doing so will save us time and money, potentially allowing the project to get underway sooner rather than later. Because builders do not lack for work right now, getting on a builder's schedule - particular for a "small" job - is quite the feat. Therefore, after a review of the proposal by our Executive Committee, an agreement was delivered this morning to Majority Builders. In the meantime, before we officially sign any contract, we are awaiting word on an application for a grant of up to $15,000 to help cover architectural expenses. Prayers, please!
And finally, a necessary electrical upgrade to the kitchen to supply power to our new appliances has been completed. The new six-burner range with a conventional oven, five-rack convection oven, and dishwasher with garbage disposal will be delivered and installed this week. If all goes according to plan, Chapter member and baker extraordinaire Patty Hans will do our first test bake in the new convection ovens on Palm Sunday morning. Fresh hot cross buns at hospitality hour!
The Dean's List
New Assistant to the Dean for Formation
I am please to announce that The Rev. Mark Hummell has accepted our invitation to join Team Cathedral as Assistant to the Dean for Formation. He will begin this quarter-time position on or around July 1. But wait, there's more! Fr. Mark will serve an additional twenty hours per week as Priest-in-Residence at the Cathedral during my sabbatical (and vacation) from August 1 through December 1.
From Fr. Mark's LinkedIn profile:
I am currently the Chaplain and Faculty for Religion, Philosophy, Ethics & Psychology at Grace Church School Manhattan. I was most recently employed as a Counselor at New York University Abu Dhabi. Prior to that, I was the Associate Rector at The Church of the Ascension Manhattan. I am also a Licensed Master Social Worker with years of psychotherapy, case management, crisis and bereavement counseling. I have also supervised and worked with seminarians and social work interns.
Fr. Mark is moving to South Bend at the conclusion of the academic year to rejoin his husband, Peter Christensen, who recently assumed the role of Vice President for Strategy and Finance at Saint Mary's College.
We are incredibly blessed not only to find someone to assume these roles at the Cathedral, but also to find someone who is so uniquely and wonderfully qualified! Watch for more information about about the opportunity to meet Fr. Mark during one of his upcoming visits to South Bend.
Sunday Adult Forum:
A Conversation about Palestine & Israel
There is, perhaps, only one hotter, more divisive topic of conversation in America right now. Let's avoid that one and talk about this one. Please come with open hearts and a spirit of inquiry to share insights, expertise, frustrations, questions, concerns and hopes about the ongoing crisis in Gaza. How are we, as Christians, called to bear witness and take action? Sunday morning from 9:15 - 10:15 in the Cathedral Conference Room.
Laetare Sunday
Laetare Sunday, like Gaudete Sunday, is a day of respite within an austere season. In both cases, the name, which means "rejoice," is taken from the first phrase in the introit appointed for the day in the old Latin mass. Laetare Sunday is observed on the Fourth Sunday in Lent and, like Gaudete Sunday (the Third Sunday of Advent), it is marked liturgically by the use of rose colored vestments and paraments. So come, rejoice with us this Sunday!
A Gift Horse
A very kind guest from St. Margaret's House rang our doorbell this afternoon to offer us one of her drawings as a gift. You may see it in person hanging on the front of the reception desk in the Cathedral offices.
Blessings,
Brian
LENT 2024
The Saintly Sixteen!
Gertrude the Great gouged Gertrude of Nivelles on Monday; Julian of Norwich bridled Brigid of Kildare on Tuesday; and Clare of Assisi routed Rafqa of Lebanon on Wednesday to round out the Saintly Sixteen. On Thursday, Albert Schweitzer became the first to make it to the Elate Eight, dispatching without doubt Blessed Thomas the Apostle. In more apostolic action today, Andrew the Fisherman is up against Hyacinth in a battle of uncommon scents! Check out Lent Madness and cast your vote!
Every service is open to anyone who wishes to come and pray. Please consider committing to even one service per week as part of your Lenten discipline.
Musicians at Thursday Vespers
Those attending Vespers last night were profoundly moved by the amazing original compositions offered in worship by John Liberatore. Thank you so much, John!
