Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend

Two things: The Cathedral of Saint James this week received news we have been given a Resource Grant from the Center for Congregations for a little in excess of $17,000. This matching grant may be used to fund architecture fees, building permits, and other aspects related to the development of our project. What a blessing!
The Cathedral Chapter has also had some conversation over the past several months about the disposition of the Saint James window. This large triptych window, which stood above the altar from our building's opening in 1894 until 1964, was designed by The Louis C. Tiffany Co.'s only female designer in the 1890s. It was sponsored by "members of St. James... in memory of the first, second, and third bishops of Indiana." The window was removed to make way for progress - in this case ductwork for central heating and air conditioning, for which I am grateful, but still... The window was crated up and stored in various places, including for a while at the Snite Museum at Notre Dame, but has not seen the light of day in sixty years, except during an evaluation and re-crating by Bovard Studios in Iowa in 2021. The Saint James Window is a treasure, to be sure, and should be restored and displayed somewhere, even - the Chapter began to reason - if that means rehoming it.
That said, thanks to the efforts of Donna Woods and Andrea Crawford the evaluate our options, the conversation now includes possibilities for incorporating the Saint James Window into our new construction either in whole or - more likely - by separating the panels and installing them in some interesting, artistic way. This week we connected our architect with our representative from Bovard Studios, who had some ideas about how we might do this. My job, if there is a way to accomplish this within a reasonable budget, will be to find funding for this project over and above the core Gather & Grow objectives.
There were two "pipe dreams" (pun intended, as you will see...) when I arrived here in 2008 as Dean: 1) Restoring the Saint James Window; and 2) Acquiring a real pipe organ. "Wonderful ideas," I said out loud, "but nowhere high enough on any priority list to ever happen." God said, "Yeah? Hold my milk and honey, Doubting Dean." And here we are. A lot still needs to happen, but what an opportunity to honor our past as we unlock our future. Please say your prayers!
The Dean's List
The High Holy Days
Christianity, particularly as we practice it, shies away from directives and demands. We tend to be pretty understanding - or at least polite - about the myriad other things in life that compete for your time. And we do our dead level best to extend grace not only theoretically, but actually. It is Holy Week, though, and in a sacramental, liturgical Christian tradition such as ours, that means we, the faithful, are called to walk with Jesus once again through his passion and death before celebrating his resurrection on Easter Sunday. The sacred three days (Triduum) are our highest holy days. In matters of ultimate meaning and concern, there is nothing more important than to witness once again God's redeeming work in the Way of the Cross.
Come and worship with us on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Great Vigil of Easter OR Easter Sunday.
The Easter Feast
The Easter Feast is a lavish celebration of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. It's abundance stands in contrast to the austerity of Lent. Thus far - just to make you aware - our Easter Feast is looking more like Easter nibbles. If you haven't had a chance to sign up to bring something to the Easter Feast, please consider doing so! We're looking for contributions of sweet or savory finger-foods with each person contribution enough to feed 10 to 12 people. Here is the link to sign up:

Sunday Adult Forum: Wholehearted Faith
Rachel Held Evans with Jeff Chu
Rachel Held Evans was a bright light who challenged and inspired many in our walk with Christ. After two Sundays off for Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, we will continue to listen to audio excerpts from her posthumously released book, Wholehearted Faith, and discuss what we have heard. Here is the proposed schedule through April:
April 7: Chapter 1
April 14: Chapter 2
April 21: Earth Day Breakfast in the Butterfly Garden
April 28: Chapter 3
Blessings,
Brian
PS> After three years of waiting, Christopher & Andrew Hillak received word this week that they have been chosen by an expectant mother to be the adoptive parents of her child, which is due mid-June. Please keep Christopher, Andrew, mother, baby, and all concerned in your fervent prayers between now and then (and then some more because parenthood, amiright?).
