The Dean's List

It’s was a really busy day, so this will be brief.

One of the ideas we are exploring through our Church Buildings for Collaborative Partnerships process is the possibility of offering space at the Cathedral for start-up businesses that need office or classroom or meeting space. Last week, in a chance conversation with a woman who had come to our door for other reasons, I discovered that she was working on business incubation opportunities for, as she puts it, black, brown, and ivory people, who represent only 6% of all small business owners. I invited her to come back and tell me more, which she did this morning. It was an interesting and enlightening conversation, which I hope she can continue with the Cathedral Chapter soon. The question for us is how we, who have an enormous amount of square footage that tends to be occupied only for a few hours in a week, might make better use of our assets for the good of the community. If we can figure out ways to generate revenue to support the Cathedral, as well, so much the better, but the primary conversation at the moment is about doing whatever it takes (remember that core value?) to fulfill our mission as a church in the heart of the city. The mission conversation is important and timely as the Heritage & Hope campaign and project evolves into the next phase: Gather & Grow, which seeks not only to complete the disability access project, but also aims to equip the Cathedral’s ministries with facilities that support our mission.

Blessings,
Brian

Lent 2023 Series:  "Benedictine Spirituality: A Lenten Journey of Reflection and Renewal"

Last week, we had the privilege of welcoming the Rev. Dr. Maxwell Johnson, Benedictine Oblate, to teach us about the role of prayer in Benedictine Spirituality. Additionally, he recommended some wonderful resources for prayer, including this and this

This Sunday, Mother Tina Velthuizen will be guiding us in a reflection on the role of humility in Benedictine Spirituality. Please read RB 7.1-7.70 (pp. 32 - 38 on 'Humility' in the Rule of St. Benedict) in preparation for this session. Mother Tina will be guiding the discussion on that chapter, including a time for lectio divina and contemplation on how this value touches your life.

Hope to see you this Sunday, March 12, at 9:15 in the Conference Room.
