Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James
January 20, 2023
The Dean's List
For your prayers.
Sam & Max. Last Sunday, a man named Sam attended the 10:30 service at the Cathedral. After the service, he was visibly distraught, so Nan Noecker and others began to speak with him. His son, Max, was recently diagnosed with leukemia and was about to be transported to Riley Children's Hospital in Indianapolis. Hearing that, Nan brought Julie Martindale - whose son, Matthew, is a leukemia survivor - into the conversation, and eventually I was able to join them. I met with Sam again on Tuesday morning just after Max was transferred by ambulance from Memorial Hospital to Riley. Please keep Sam, Max, and their family in your prayers. Also, Sam hopes someday to bring Max to worship here. I advised him - due to Max's immunocompromised situation, to come to the 8 o'clock service. If this does, in fact, happen, it would be an generous act of love and hospitality for all of us to mask up while Max is in the room.
Donna & Dave Woods. Donna received news this week that her replacement shoulder needs to be replaced upon her surgeon's discovery of a broken screw in the original implant. Surgery will likely happen in the next month or so. Please keep the Woods in your prayers.
Jeremy. Peg Swadener's nephew, Jeremy, died this week after succumbing to an overdose. Please pray for the repose of Jeremy's soul, for Peg, for her brother, Bill, and their whole family.
2023 Annual Meeting
On Sunday, January 8, Senior Warden Liz Burman, project team conveners Kim Gray, Hal Culbertson, and Andrea Crawford (by proxy), and I presented the first part of our Annual Parish Meeting in place of the homily. Our focus was "Renewal," both as an exercise in conjunction with Lilly's Clergy Renewal Program grant application and as a focus of several current ministry initiatives. Liz has since compiled the congregation's responses to the three questions she posed, which we will be sharing soon. You all provided very encouraging and useful feedback!
The business part of our Annual Meeting will take place this coming Sunday, January 22. We will meet between services at 9:15 am in Cathedral Hall. At this meeting we will elect a Junior Warden, four Chapter members, and two delegates to Diocesan Convention, after which we will hear summaries of the 2022 Year-End Financial Statement and 2023 Budget, which the Cathedral Chapter adopted at their meeting on January 10.
Please come!
Organ Transplants
Part One: The Allen Organ. The Allen organ is the electronic organ that served the Cathedral from 2004 until 2021. As you may recall, the Allen is still operational, but when given a too-good-to-pass-up opportunity to acquire a pipe organ being given away by LaPorte Hospital, we jumped at the chance. With a nine-rank expansion of the Kegg organ pending, the time was nigh to begin disassembling the Allen to a) make room for new pipes; and b) send the Allen to a new home, should one be found. While we have not yet located a taker for the Allen (there is a possibility... say your prayers :), a crew from Koontz-Wagner recently brought in a (really cool!) lift to remove the speakers from the rafters and the old organ loft. A brawny Cathedral crew subsequently moved the speakers to the Peterson Building Annex to be stored until the organ finds a new home. Thus, the Allen organ console that remains in the Cathedral is currently just a very large paper weight.
Part Two: The Kegg Organ. Upon the recommendations of the builder, Chuck Kegg, and our Director of Music, Steve Wietstock, and with funds in hand from recent memorial contributions, the Cathedral Chapter approved a nine-rank expansion of the Kegg organ. The organ was originally built for the chapel at LaPorte Hospital - a much smaller and acoustically livelier room - so the additional ranks will round out its sound in our worship space. When the order was placed, the timeframe for completion of this project was November 2022. "Yay! Just in time for Christmas!" we exclaimed. Well... supply chain issues caused delays in the fabrication of several sets of pipes, so Mr. Kegg moved the estimated completion date to January 2023. "Oh! Well, maybe in time for a pre-Lenten dedication," we said. Well... that turned out to be optimistic, too. We are now on to "maybe before Easter." "Yep," we said, "How about we just don't worry about it and you call us when it's about to happen?"
So that's the current status: It'll be finished when it's finished, hopefully spring/summer-ish. And when that day comes, we will have an organ recital, and high tea, and there will be great rejoicing, and probably shortcakes on the blacktop.
Blessings,
Brian
