The Season of Pentecost
November  22nd, 2024
Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend

Father Mark's Musings

Why is this Sunday So Important?

This Sunday is the Feast of Christ the King.  Pope Pius XI designated it as such in 1925, and other churches have embraced it over the years.  The Episcopal Church has observed it on the last Sunday after Pentecost, before the beginning of Advent, since 1970.  Pius XI initially established the feast to remind a Europe that was deeply divided in the aftermath of World War I and where frightening fascism was ascending in many places that our true identity is to be found in Jesus, and our deepest allegiance is to his reign of love, not to any earthly nation, ruler, or political party.

Boldly keeping this feast is as essential today as it was in 1925.  Our nation and the world at large is cut with deep and intersecting canyons of division and animosity.  Neo-Nazis were marching in the streets of Columbus, Ohio last week (NYTimes link), and this week the KKK distributed fliers in Northern Indiana, including throughout the Michiana area (WNDU link).

Although the Episcopal Church stands firm against prejudice, violence, and rhetoric that hurts the least among us, something is to be said when we actually stand together, praying together, being allies together against the forces of evil in our world today--even evil in our back yards.

I hope you will join us on this Christ the King Sunday to share the good news without shame, apology, or fear.  We know that claiming our true citizenship in the realm where Jesus reigns is the only way to find true and abundant life in a harsh and conflicted world, and the people with whom we serve are longing for the liberation and joy that only the good news can bring through Christ our King.

Pledge In-Gathering is this Sunday
You may pledge online using this link.

On Sunday, we will ask God to bless and use our wealth, work, and wisdom to meet the needs of our church, serve our neighbors, heal the world, and strengthen our community.

Pledges made during our annual campaign are the backbone of our ministry.  Our Chapter and Finance Committees work hard this time of year on next year's budget, which is based directly on the total pledges we receive.

Our budget is how we make decisions about everything we will do in the coming year, from salaries to programs, ministry, music, and so much more.

Parishioners approve the budget at our annual meeting in January but may ask to see the budget drafts at any time.

Every pledge matters. No matter how big or small, providing us with your estimated giving for 2025 is the best way to ensure your giving is part of our shared decision-making about what we do together as a parish. We will work with you if you need to update your estimate at a later date.

If you haven't pledged yet, we hope you will bring your paper pledge card to church this Sunday.  There are extras at the back of the church, or you may submit your pledge online.

  Rocco's Pizza Party!

Neither rain, sleet, nor snow could keep the Pizza Fellowship from sharing a few slices and a good conversation at Rocco's Pizza last night.  Keep an eye open for future gatherings.
