The Season of Pentecost

Father Mark's Musings

A King in the Darkest Hour

This is the time of year when our liturgical calendar ends. On November 30th, we depart from ordinary time, and on December 1st, we enter Advent.  So, the focus is on time.  This is not a bad theme to focus on this time of year when it starts getting dark around 5 pm, and we have more time to contemplate how we best use our limited daylight hours.

There is a lot of darkness in our world right now: changes and uncertainty in Washington, wars, inflation, and a host of personal issues we all carry with us. As our nation sits in anticipation of what a new administration brings, the church will also enter a time of waiting in anticipation of Christmas.

This Sunday is the Twenty-sixth Sunday after Pentecost. It has been a long stretch of ordinary time. Next week, Sunday (November 24th), is the Feast of Christ the King. It is a relative newcomer to our liturgical calendar, first instituted by the Roman Catholic Church in 1925 and institutionalized by the 1970s throughout many Christian denominations. It is fixed as occurring on the last Sunday before Advent.

This year, at the Cathedral, we moved the renewal of vows for the Daughters of the King (DOT) members from All Saints' Sunday to the Feast of Christ the King. DOT members will also present at the Adult Forum at 9:15 a.m. on Christ the King Sunday.

As we live in this time of darkness and uncertainty, let us remember who our true king is by ending this message with the Collect for the Feast of Christ the King:  Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved son, the King of kings and Lord of lords:  Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen. (BCP, 236).

Up...up...and away...
This week, the new addition and elevator construction made lots of progress. These pictures were taken from the second floor of Cathedral House. Masons continued laying bricks this week and will do so next week. According to Kirk Philippsen, we are anticipating some interior work and outside finished brickwork in the near future.
Keep up with the latest progress from our new addition at this link

Nursery Ideas?
On Fridays, St. Margaret's House uses our nursery as part of the "Talk With Your Baby" program. However, in recent months, we have had very little use of the nursery on Sundays.

We want some feedback from you about the following questions:
1.  Do you know that we have a nursery?
2.  If you have a child who is nursery school age and do not use it, why might you be reluctant to do so?
3.  Who might be interested in staffing the nursery on Sunday mornings?
4.  Do you see the importance of having a nursery on Sundays?  If so, why or why not?
5.  Anything else you would like to share.

Please see Fr. Mark or email him at this link to give us some of your nursery ideas.
