All Saints Day
November 1st, 2024
Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend

“For All The Saints, from whom their labors rest…”

Bishop Wiliam How wrote the hymn “For All The Saints” in 1864 for All Saints Day, a day meant to honor departed saints, whether known or unknown. The hymn celebrates the saints who went before us—“who for their labors rest.”  It tells how God sustained them through difficult times, strengthened them to battle evil, and brought light to their darkest days.

This week, we have been organizing hundreds of cards that say “With Gratitude for the Life of…” and have the names of loved ones written on them by parishioners. These names will be listed in the bulletin, and on Sunday, their names will be read aloud in unison. The named cards will be displayed throughout the cathedral. This has been a tradition of the Cathedral of Saint James for many years.

In an article entitled “The Loving Wisdom of a 4-Year-Old,”    the following is written: Upon seeing his elderly neighbor crying on his porch because he had just lost his wife, the little 4-year-old boy climbed onto the old gentleman’s lap and just sat there with him. When his mother asked what he had said to the old man, the little boy simply said, “Nothing, I just helped him cry.”– Anonymous, (Reflections Newsletter, Center for Hospice Care, Issue 4).

“I just helped him cry.”  Where can we do that in today’s world?  Cry?--with tears of sadness or tears of joy?  Tears shed aloud or in our hearts?  Our All Saints Gospel this Sunday focuses on the resurrection of Lazarus.  Mary, Lazurus’ sister, cries and says, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."  Her tears of sorrow are turned to joy with the raising of Lazarus by the end of that Gospel reading.

I hope you can join us this Sunday and that your tears of sadness will be turned to tears of joy as we see the saints who have gone before us, their legacy covering the Cathedral walls, and their names read aloud in unison. May we see the work that is before us as saints in today’s world, giving thanks “for all the saints, from whom their labors rest.”

A Prayer for the U.S. Election

O God, as we approach our November election, so many find ourselves increasingly gripped by

fear, distrust and anger. We ask you to help heal our

nation from its dangerous divide. We

pray that you give us clarity to see that your Truth

manifests in many forms. We pray that

you remind us that we are called to love one another, as

we are each made in Your image.

Guide us in creating an environment of honor and hope,

even when — and especially when, we

don't see life through the same eyes. Lighten the

burdens that have been placed upon us so

that we may be bearers of Your light. Bless us with the

wholeness of health, the sweetness of

faith, the richness of wisdom and the calming coolness

of your peace and mercy.

— The Rt. Rev. Mark Beckwith

— Rabbi Matthew Gewirtz

— Imam W. Deen Shareef

 Are you feeling called?...

The Diocese of Indianapolis' Commission on Ministry and Bishop Jennifer are facilitating a retreat called "Discerning God’s Call" at Church of the Nativity, Indianapolis, on November 16th from 10-4:30 ET (9-3:30 CT). They are graciously inviting folks from our diocese who might be exploring their vocations, and Canon Terri Bays will be attending as our diocesan representative.

This event is designed for all believers - those who are exploring a call to ordained ministry as well as those who seek to go deeper in their lay ministry.

Information will be shared on the discernment process for ordained ministry in each diocese as well as opportunities for additional lay formation.

Registration is open until November 11th. The cost is $15 to cover the cost of lunch.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to Cannon Terri Bays at this link, or register at this link.
