Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend

The Eve of Pentecost

The Dean's List

Pentecost
Tomorrow we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, the day upon which the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples in a rush of mighty wind with tongues of fire, according to the Acts of the Apostles. The emboldened and empowered disciples then began proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those around them in many tongues, so that each could understand what they were saying. This, we say, is the day the Church was born; the day upon which those who had been Jesus' companions began to carry Jesus' message to the world, offering themselves in every way - body, mind, soul, resources - to share the life and light of Christ.

So we invite you to a birthday party tomorrow, which also happens to be the day upon which we will begin not only to imagine new possibilities for the Cathedral of Saint James, but take tangible steps to fulfill old promises and unlock new doors.

Gather & Grow
Tomorrow we officially launch the Gather & Grow Capital Campaign. Campaign Chair Christopher Schenkel, Bishop Doug Sparks, and I will make a brief presentation outlining the campaign and announcing next steps at both the 8 am and 10:30 am services. A (short) ceremonial ground breaking for the elevator addition - the footprint of which has been staked out and outlined - will take place in the Butterfly Garden at Noon. The Gather & Grow Capital Campaign will run through the end of June.

Shortcakes on the Blacktop
Our 30th Shortcakes on the Blacktop Strawberry Festival is in full swing from now through our Festival Day: Thursday, June 6. Fliers are being distributed, tickets were mailed out yesterday afternoon, and mixing, baking, and berry merry-making sign-up sheets are posted and ready to be filled up. See the graphic below for dates and times.

A word about tickets: Advance ticket sales are critical to the success of every strawberry festival. Everyone on our mailing list will receive 10 tickets in the mail, and everyone has three options with respect to the tickets:

  • Sell them to your friends, neighbors, coworkers, family members, etc.,

  • Purchase them to use or give away;

  • Bring them back to the Cathedral OR discard them (just please let us know)

No one is under any obligation to sell or purchase tickets; we're just trying to make it easy for you if you want to. If you need more tickets, please call the office to let us know.

Let us pray.

"See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation!
We are putting no obstacles in anyone's way."
2 Corinthians 6:2b-3a

Lord Jesus, you promised that wherever we gather in your name, you will surely be in our midst: Give us, we humbly ask, the will and the way to open fully the Cathedral of Saint James to all who would enter here that we, gathered in your presence, may continually grow in faith, hope, and love, and be moved by your Holy Spirit to carry on your work in the world around us; in your most holy Name we pray. Amen.
