Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend
Ordinary Time
The Season after Pentecost
The Dean's List
Order it up. After reviewing the bids curated by Majority Builders for construction of our new entrance and deliberating over costs and options, the Gather & Grow Building Committee, the Finance Committee, and the Chapter all voted unanimously this past week to proceed with the plan as designed by our architect. Construction costs have risen considerably, so pressing “go” on this aspect of the Gather & Grow project calls us into deeper levels of faith, creativity, and commitment as we set out to accomplish the work we truly believe God has given us to do in our time. Gather & Grow Capital Campaign Chair Christopher Schenkel and Senior Warden Liz Burman will address the congregations at both the 8 am and 10:30 am services tomorrow, June 23, and the Adult Forum on June 30 will be set aside to go over the details of the project for anyone who wishes to learn more.
SOBT Review. 2024 Shortcakes on the Blacktop Co-Chairs Catherine Craker and Helene Dauerty-Randles are hosting a post-event evaluation meeting tomorrow - Sunday, June 23 - in Cathedral Hall following the 10:30 am service. Please come to share any thoughts you have on what went well and what we might consider to make future strawberry festivals even better.
July 6 Ordination. Bishop Doug Sparks will ordain Thomas Anthony Gresik to the Sacred Order of Deacons on Saturday, July 6, beginning at 10:00 am. A reception for an estimated 40-60 people will follow at the back of the Church. Betsy VanderBurg is seeking contributions of a vegetable tray, fruit, and desserts (finger foods, one and all). Please let her know if you can help!
July 6 Quick Reset. Do you have a little time around 1:00 pm to help us reset the Sanctuary between services on July 6? Please speak with Fr. Brian, Deacon Anne, or Deacon Clay.
July 6 Funeral. At 3:00 pm, we will commend Vivian Agnes Woods, mother of Dave Woods, into the eternal arms of God at a funeral service in her honor and memory. A small reception will follow. Please let Betsy VanderBurg know if you can help, particularly with clean-up.
Baseball. There is a sign-up sheet at the back of the church for a Cathedral outing to see the South Bend Cubs vs. Quad Cities River Bandits on Sunday, July 21 at 2:05 pm. We reserved 40 spaces for a ballyard feast in The Landing picnic area! Tickets ($32 each) include seating in both the picnic area and left-center field, a South Bend Cubs baseball cap, and a 2-hour Classic Ballpark Buffet featuring grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, chips, Stouffer's Mac and Cheese, cookies, and beverages (lemonade, water and soda). Reduced cost tickets are available; just ask Fr. Brian. Online registration will be available beginning next week.
Storytelling. Adult Forum in July will feature LGBTQ+ Voices from the Cathedral community sharing their stories of sorrow and struggle, joy, triumph, and love. Come hear from those who are near and dear to us. 9:15 am each Sunday in July in the Conference Room.
Database. We are updating our database to ensure we have the most accurate and current information for our members and friends so we may better serve our congregation. Here's how you can help. Joe Anand-Obleton will staff a computer station in the back of the Cathedral following our 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. services on Sunday, July 14 and Sunday, July 28. There you can verify your information directly, or you may fill out this online form any time. Questions? Email Joe Anand-Obleton Thank you for your help in this project!
New Staff Member. Fr. Mark Hummell begins his tenure as the Assistant to the Dean for Formation on Monday, July 1 (technically, anyway; the Cathedral offices are closed that day). Fr. Mark comes to us from the Grace Church School in New York City, where he served as School Chaplain and Chair of Philosophy & Religion Department for ten years He is a Notre Dame alum, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and - for the past twenty years - an Episcopal priest. Fr. Mark is moving to South Bend to join his husband, Peter Christensen, who was recently appointed as Vice President for Strategy and Finance at Saint Mary's College. I am thrilled to welcome him to Team Cathedral both in his ongoing, part-time capacity as Assistant for Formation and in his full-time capacity as Priest-in-Residence during my upcoming sabbatical.
Blessings,
Brian
