Back in the Saddle (Again)
Tamisyn and I are back in the Bend following our week-long vacation that included, among other things, gathering three of our four children and two of their partners at a VRBO on the Rock River in Rockford, Illinois. It was - I must say - quite lovely. We got in some great hiking around Rockford and Baraboo, Wisconsin, lots of family fun, and really good food. Time now to pay attention to my diet again. Other than a quick trip to Toronto August 9-12 to see the Cubs play the Blue Jays, I should pretty much be in residence now through mid-November, although we may need to work out a trip to New York City and Delaware. I'll keep you apprised.
Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory
Professor Omotayo Olutoye, mother of Dr. Bunmi Okanlami, passed into the nearer presence of Jesus last Saturday, July 22, at her home in Nigeria. She was 87. Click here to read an article about a eulogy given for Professor Olutoye by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu. Church and State funeral services will be held for her at the end of August and beginning of September. A memorial service will be held for her at the Cathedral of Saint James on Saturday, October 14. Please pray for her husband - Bunmi's father - Olufemi Olutoye, and for the whole Olutoye family.
The Doors
One quiet-yet-very-impactful project underway at the Cathedral is the replacement of the exterior doors on the church building (and the Peterson Building annex, but that one is more utilitarian than exciting). New doors have been installed at the Chapel entrance and on the side entrance of the Cathedral. These red oak doors feature windows that not only allow light into some formerly dark spaces, but also allow us to see who, if anyone, is outside the door. New front doors - also red oak, and also featuring windows - are expected to arrive after Labor Day.
Why new doors? The Peterson Annex door was crumbling into rusty dust, and the two doors that have already been replaced at the Cathedral were likely original equipment wooden doors that were rotting at the bottom and tending to swell shut, making them unsafe and unsecure. The front doors, which were new in the early 2000s, have a fatal design flaw that allows water to seep inside the doors and rust the locking mechanism, which is why - at times - we have had to improvise a bar to hold the doors closed. In my time here, we have replaced the locking mechanism twice at a cost approaching $1,000 each time. So... new doors. The front doors, you may be aware, were a memorial to June Gurbick, beloved wife of our long-time and recently deceased friend and sexton, Tom Gurbick. The new doors will remain a memorial to her.
Extra special thanks to Will Campbell for his outstanding work sealing the doors and beginning trim work. That is an amazing gift of time and talent!
Cathedral of Saint James & St. Margaret's House
I will say more about this soon, but parallel development projects at the Cathedral & St. Margaret's House continue to take shape in full conversation with one another. On the Cathedral side, we are moving forward to develop Gather & Grow - the successor to Heritage & Hope - that will add an elevator to the office building and address needs in our worship space, Cathedral Hall, and kitchen. St. Margaret's House is exploring a comprehensive program that addresses many issues including hospitality, accessibility, safety, security, and additional space. Taken together, there is an exciting potential to make a significant and lasting improvement to the streetscape in downtown South Bend for generations to come. Stay tuned for more information!
Blessings,
Brian

Forever Learning Fall Courses

Faith in Indiana Thanksgiving
for Community Mental Health Crisis Center
Prayers of thanksgiving: When we act together, we can make change happen! We give thanks for the groundbreaking of a new crisis center in South Bend on August 8, and that the Indiana legislature recently committed $100 million to mental health crisis response. Join others from Faith in Indiana for a lunch celebration at noon on Aug 8 at Howard Park (RSVP here).
We made it happen! For years, jail has been the de-facto detox center in our community, and when a family member is in a mental health crisis, the only number to call is the police. That is changing! Join others from Faith in Indiana for a lunch celebration on August 8 at noon at Howard Park (RSVP here). Because faith communities imagined a safe and caring community and acted together, Oaklawn will be breaking ground for a new crisis response center in downtown South Bend on August 8. This complements the mobile mental health teams they have been running for more than a year on a pilot basis. And in the last legislative session, the faith community, joined by mental health advocates, sheriffs, and business leaders, helped win $100 million for mental health crisis response from the state legislator! None of this happened on its own! And the faith community took the lead. Celebrate with others from Faith in Indiana at a light lunch on Aug 8 at Howard Park (RSVP here).
I feel privileged to have worked closely with many of you on this campaign. We all share credit for this important victory. This is not the end of our work, but an important milestone. Thanks and blessings to you all.
Yours,
Andre Stoner
