The Reverend Mark W. Hummell
assistant to the dean for Formation & Priest-in-Residence

Father Mark joined the Cathedral in July 2024 as the Assistant to the Dean for Formation and Priest-in-Residence. His primary ministry is coordinating Christian formation for children, youth, and adults. He also assists the Dean with liturgical leadership, pastoral care, and administration as needed.

A native of Southern Indiana, Fr. Mark has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame, a Master of Social Work from Arizona State University, and a Master of Divinity from Yale University.  He comes to the Cathedral from Grace Church School in New York City, where he served for the past ten years as the Chaplain and taught Religion, Philosophy, Ethics, and Psychology.  He was the Chair of the Philosophy & Religion Department at Grace and an Advisor to high school students.

Fr. Mark is also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of Indiana and has provided psychotherapy, crisis management, bereavement counseling and held spiritual and therapeutic groups. His prior roles included Counselor in the Health and Wellness Center at New York University Abu Dhabi, Associate Rector at The Church of the Ascension in New York City, Associate Director of Episcopal Charities in the Diocese of New York, Assisting Priest at The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City, as well as an MSW at Connecticut Hospice in Branford, Connecticut and Good Samaritan Medical Center and Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, Arizona.

Fr. Mark and his husband Peter, who is Vice President for Strategy and Finance at Saint Mary’s College and a lifelong Episcopalian, live in the North Shore Triangle neighborhood of South Bend. Both enjoy walks along the St. Joseph River, theatre, music, and dinner with friends old and new.
