Saint Valentine
Valentine's Day is quite the mash-up of stories and traditions. Cupid, the cherubic, arrow-slinging demon (yes, demon), is often portrayed in Roman mythology as the offspring of Venus, the Goddess of Love, and Mars, the God of War. This explains a lot. Or at least gives us insight into our Roman forebears as astute observers of the human condition.
Valentine was either a priest and physician from Rome, or a bishop from Terni, Italy - maybe both - who was martyred in Rome on February 14 around the year 270 AD. He is the patron saint of lovers, people with epilepsy, and beekeepers. According to Britannica online, "St. Valentine signed a letter 'from your Valentine' to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and healed from blindness. Another common legend states that he defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the husbands from being conscripted to serve in war."
Valentine's greetings date as far back as the late middle ages, but gained widespread popularity in the 19th century. Valentine is on the calendar of Saints in the Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Lutheran churches, however widespread observance of his feast day ended in the Roman Church in 1969 due to the lack of reliable information about him. He does, however, remain on the calendar of saints for local commemoration. In the Episcopal Church, February 14 is observed as the feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius, missionaries to the Slavs, because we're romantic like that.
Speaking of Saints...
Paint the Saints for Lent Madness
Sunday, February 16 at 9:15 am
Lent Madness is a unique, March-Madness-inspired Lenten devotional brought to us by the Forward Movement. Are you up to speed on Z saints like Zechariah, Lucy Yi Zhenmei, Zenaida, Zita? Do you know what Wenceslaus did aside from looking out on the feast of Stephen? Do cool names like Quiteria and Mechthild pique your curiosity? Learn more about these (and many more!) Saints in the 2025 Lent Madness bracket! We'll begin by painting peg dolls of the saints this Sunday at a special Through the Years.

He will also lead discussions on this topic to encourage us to spread this knowledge and promote just peace. You did not need to attend Part 1 to join us in Part 2.
Winter Walk Parking
The Cathedral's North Parking Lot (Lafayette Boulevard) will be closed this weekend for Winter Walk. We will open the lot around 11:30 am Friday, February 14 for attendees at the Noon Eucharist only. The tent putter-upper people will arrive after 1 pm to set up the big top in the back of the parking lot. The lot will remain closed on Saturday and Sunday. The tent taker-downer people will be there at some point on Monday.
Sunday morning parking will be available in our South Parking Lot (West Washington Street), on the street, and in various nearby lots that aren't used on Sundays.
Blessings,
Brian
