Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend
The Dean's List
Stations of the Cross
Carl Hetler, the former pastor at Broadway Christian Parish who now works for the City of South Bend as the Coordinator on Homelessness, put together a two-mile, twelve-stop Stations of the Cross walk through downtown South Bend for Holy Week. About 40 people gathered this morning to walk the Way of the Cross with stations posted at places where significant work is being done for the poor and homeless who live among us. It was quite a poignant juxtaposition of the plight of the disaffected and disenfranchised with the politics of power that led Jesus to the cross.
Along the way, as we were walking to the emotionally difficult station at which Jesus is mocked and derided without mercy, a passenger in a car stopped at a traffic light shouted an epithet towards the entire group that suggested he wanted to know every one of us quite intimately but, of course, idiomatically means exactly the opposite. I was fairly close to this gentleman when he made his feelings known, so I just said, "thank you," mostly because "and also with you" seemed like it might inadvertently escalate things.
It was not lost on me, though, that this is the challenge of the way of the cross: the Good Friday example of Jesus not to return anger for anger or meet violence with violence, but to trust that love actually does have the power to transform and heal and save.
As I used to say at the end of my pandemic-era meditation videos, "God is always speaking."
Shall We Continue?
We prayed, as a faith community, every day from Ash Wednesday through Easter Sunday, resting in the presence of God and immersing our people and building in the Living Word. Thank you to everyone who made this foundational work happen. What a gift.
Shall we continue? I am wondering if we might carry on this largely lay-led ministry at least through the 50-day Easter season on a reduced schedule, perhaps with Morning Prayer on Tuesdays, Evening Prayer on Wednesday, and Vespers one Thursday each month?
Interested? Here is a link to the sign-up sheet.
Big Provincial Gathering Volunteers
The Province V BPG rolls into town on Wednesday, April 24 and Thursday April 25 with some pre-event meetings and then hits full stride on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27 with events scheduled at the Cathedral, St. Margaret's House, First Presbyterian Church, and South Bend City Church. We are looking for volunteers to help with hospitality coordination and childcare.
Childcare is a paid position. Workers need to be 18+ years old and Safe Church trained. We need teams of two from 11 am to 4 pm on Friday, 4 pm - 9 pm on Friday, and 9 am - 1 pm on Saturday. If you are interested, or know someone who may be interested, please let me know. We can arrange Safe Church training, if necessary.
Sunday Adult Forum: Wholehearted Faith
Rachel Held Evans with Jeff Chu
Rachel Held Evans was a bright light who challenged and inspired many in our walk with Christ. After two Sundays off for Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, we will continue to listen to audio excerpts from her posthumously released book, Wholehearted Faith, and discuss what we have heard. Here is the proposed schedule through April:
April 7: Chapter 1
April 14: Chapter 2
April 21: Earth Day Breakfast in the Butterfly Garden
April 28: Chapter 3
Parental Visit
My parents, Jan & Gene Grantz, celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on Thursday, April 4. What they wanted, more than anything, was to have all of my children together with them in one place, which hasn't happened for awhile. So, rather than trying to get everyone to Delaware, where my folks live, we are bringing them here. Tamisyn and I will pick them up at Midway Airport on Wednesday, April 3. Our children will be in town for the weekend, with what we hope is a reasonable itinerary. Included is the Friday Noon Eucharist on April 5 with lunch at Simeri's following and, of course, Sunday morning at the Cathedral with a slightly dressed up hospitality hour to celebrate with them. All are welcome to come greet my parents and take part in the celebration - so long as you don't ask about my childhood antics.
April is Surgery Month, Apparently
Here's who on the Cathedral staff is NOT having surgery in April (so far): Steven Mast and Joe Anand-Obleton. The rest of us are, in one form or another. I will let the others say (or not) as they will, but I, myself, am having surgery on my right foot (for the third time) on Friday, April 12, in an ongoing effort to correct a manufacturer's defect. I will need to be non-weight-bearing for a bit after that - definitely missing services on April 12 & 14 - but will hopefully be able to maneuver on crutches soon thereafter. I'll keep you posted.
Blessings,
Brian
