Lamentation, Love, and Longing
Tonight's Thursday Vespers

The adulation of a thrilling Super Bowl victory on Sunday has been supplanted by the horror of a mass shooting on Wednesday amid a Kansas City crowd estimated at one million people who had come to celebrate with their team. It felt... inevitable. Local authorities say that it appears the rampage began as a personal dispute and was not an act of terrorism, political or otherwise. While knowing it was not a pre-meditated attack is important, it was - nevertheless - terrifying. The trauma to those who were there will be ongoing and incalculable. Far beyond that, the very feeling of the grotesque inevitability of mass shootings in our country speaks to the trauma we already carry.

Sadly, the Kansas City shooting wasn't even the only mass casualty incident in the US yesterday. Two other mass shooting were reported in Georgia: one in Atlanta, the other 200 miles away in Claxton. Indeed, by the end of the day yesterday - the 45th day of 2024 - there had been 49 mass shootings in the United States this year. And - of course - we remember all too well the last time Valentine's Day and Ash Wednesday converged: the day of the horrific Parkland shooting in 2018.

I don't really know what to say anymore, but I know what I am feeling: sadness, anger, frustration, futility. And while I know that "thoughts and prayers" has become a hackneyed response, it is - actually - vital for us to reflect and pray, laying our anguish before God, and invoking the power of the Spirit to move us to healing, life-giving, loving action for the common good.

It's short notice, but tonight's Vesper prayers will guide us in lamentation, love, and longing. 8 pm at the Cathedral.

Parking This Weekend.
This is not only Winter Walk weekend, this is 25th Anniversary Winter Walk weekend! To house their celebration, St. Margaret's House is putting up an extra large tent in the north parking lot. Crews will be here on Friday to set up, so the parking lot will be closed to SMH staff, volunteers, and guests all day. WE WILL OPEN perimeter spaces along the Central Automotive wall and the alley AT 11:45 AM for those attending the Friday Noon Eucharist.

The north parking lot will be CLOSED this Sunday, February 18. Those attending services at the Cathedral should park in the south lot (by the ramp entrance on West Washington St), on the street, or in the old Tribune lot at the corner of Colfax and Lafayette.

Shortcakes on the Blacktop.
The Cathedral's premier fundraiser, outreach, and community building event - Shortcakes on the Blacktop - is not long off in early June. Catherine Craker and Helene Dauerty-Randles will be co-chairing this year's strawberry festival - thank you so, so much! As always, we need a large team of volunteers to manage all of the tasks from logistics and advertising to baking and order-taking. There will be an organizational meeting on Sunday, February 25 at Noon in Cathedral Hall to get the berry rolling. Please attend whether you are set to volunteer or just curious to know more.

Speaking of Volunteers.
The Cathedral will once again host the Big Provincial Gathering. Various aspects of this event for the midwestern province of the Episcopal Church (Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and the eastern half of Missouri) will take place from Thursday, April 25 through Saturday, April 27. We will need help with childcare, food coordinating, hospitality, and directing people to breakout rooms and other facilities. A volunteer drive is coming soon, but in the meantime, please consider your availability to help us put our most hospitable foot forward. Thank you!

Defibrillator.

The Cathedral Chapter recently authorized the purchase of a defibrillator. It is now installed in the vestibule at the back entrance. Anyone wishing to be trained in the use of the defibrillator should contact Junior Warden Dave Woods

Blessings :)
Brian

PS> I am, once again, following the Noom program both for better overall health and to get in shape for the full Camino de Santiago later this year. Please don't feed the priest :)
