Notes & News from the Cathedral of Saint James, South Bend
What's a little snow among friends?
Saint James' Annual Parish Meeting will be held this Sunday, January 21. Yeah, I said it. Snow? We fear no snow (we do, however, respect it quite a lot).
We're set to meet in Cathedral Hall at Noon for a potluck lunch, a preview of the big year ahead, hear and participate in a keynote presentation on story from storyteller extraordinaire Marie Gambetta (who has to travel through LaPorte County
to get here, so we'll see...), elect Chapter and Convention representatives, and take a look at the 2024 budget.
Childcare will be provided in the youth rooms. Please come, help us celebrate life as a Cathedral congregation.

A Case for Love Movie
Tuesday, January 23 at 7 pm
Cinemark Theaters, Mishawaka
“A Case for Love” is a heartfelt yet personally challenging movie inspired by the teachings and writings of Bishop Michael Curry. The Cathedral community is encouraged to attend the screening of the film on Tuesday, January 23. We will also engage in follow-up discussions for several weeks afterwards. To find out more and to purchase tickets, click here.
A Month of
Unselfish Love
Download the Journal
“A Month of Unselfish Love” challenge will launch on the same day as the film A Case for Love. During those 30 days, people across the country will perform daily acts of selflessness and journaling their moments. Join us as we put unselfish love front and center for the world to see! Stay tuned for more details by “Joining the Movement!” We’ll be releasing details progressively as we journey to the movie event on January 23, 2024.
Don’t forget to tell others you’re participating in the “Month of Unselfish Love” on social media–and challenge them to join you! Use the free downloadable content available through the link above. Remember to tag #ACASEFORLOVE in your media posts!
The Episcopal Diocese of Northern Indiana and The Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis are engaged in a discernment process about possible reunification. To learn more about this important work for the Episcopal Church in Indiana, click here.
The Discernment Committee is currently conducting a series of online listening sessions, which you may sign up for through the website. If, however, you would prefer to participate in an in-person listening session, the Cathedral of Saint James is pleased to welcome you to do so on the morning of January 27. Please use the registration link below to let us (the Cathedral) know you are coming. Please DO NOT register for the concurrent online session; we are already registered as a group.
We look forward to our conversation!

2024 Chili Contest
Saturday, January 27 at 5:00 pm
in Cathedral Hall
Get out those chili recipes, grab your wooden spoon, and fire up the crock pot! The Annual Saint James Chili Contest returns to Cathedral Hall on Saturday, January 27. Challenge friends and neighbors! Challenge anyone who makes a tasty bowl of winter blues-chasing chili!
How It Works
Contestants make a pot (about a gallon) of their best chili, carry it to the Cathedral in a crock pot or other similar self-warming apparatus, decorate a table, and prepare to serve. We provide the sampling cups, bowls, and utensils. Guests (not cooks) pay an admission fee ($8/person), sample all of the chili they care to, and cast ballots for their favorites. At the end of the evening, the ballots are counted and winners receive not-quite-valuable prizes. Beer, wine, and soft drinks are available for purchase. Water is free. Antacids are negotiable.
The Clergy Discretionary Fund
It’s all for a good cause! Proceeds benefit the Cathedral's Clergy Discretionary Fund which supports our direct ministry to the poor. So come on out, tantalize (or terrorize) your taste buds, and help us help others make it through the winter cold.
Spice Up the Bleak Midwinter!
Set-up at 4 pm; Doors open at 5 pm; Balloting until 6:30 pm; Awards at 6:50 pm.
