From the Dean

Hail Thee, (Strawberry) Festival Day!
The 29th Annual Shortcakes on the Blacktop strawberry festival is in the books! We sold the last of our 3,000 original shortcakes just before the 5:30 end time, then a few more gluten-free shortcakes to the last few festival-goers before the proverbial curtain fell around 5:35. From the 800 pounds of strawberries we started with, we have only one-half bucket remaining. As for ice cream? Well, that's another matter. We can all look forward to an ice-cream social during hospitality hour at some point this summer.

Deliveries went very well. Walk-up and drive-thru sales went very well. With special tips of the hat to a crew from early release and our own Saint James youth group, our volunteers did outstanding work.

And, last but in no way least, our coordinators, Catherine Craker and Chau-ly Phan, neither of whom were SOTB veterans, did great work in pulling it all together, with special thanks to several volunteer coordinators who oversaw baking, slicing, advertising, delivery coordination, delivery order fulfillment, production line work for walk-up and volunteers, accounting, food for volunteers, and whatever else I am missing.

With final accounting still to come, it looks like we will be able to give away between $10k - $11k to Chiara Home, Dismas House, and St. Margaret's House.

On top of all of that, the weather was perfect AND we, as a church, were privileged to meet and interact with thousands of people from all walks of life in our community in the most positive (and delicious) way.

Well done, y'all!

PS> If you brought a cooler for Shortcakes deliver, you can pick it up in Cathedral Hall this Sunday. Thank you!

Evensong with the Notre Dame Children's Choir at Saint James
The Notre Dame Children's Choir will be at the Cathedral this coming Thursday, June 15, to sing Evensong. The service begins at 6:00 pm and should last for about 45 minutes. Please join us for this wonderful ecumenical prayer service.

Norm Dales, Steven Slaubaugh, Baseball: June 25
Norm Dales, a long-time member of the Cathedral community, died at the height of the pandemic. The funeral for this great saint of God, who was - among other things - a well-known little league baseball coach and the last of our World War II veterans, could only be attended by a handful of people seated at a safe distance from one another. Norm deserved better. The Cathedral community deserved better. We are going to honor and remember Norm on Sunday, June 25 at the 10:30 am service.

Steven Slaubaugh, a six-year member of the Cathedral community and three-year Cathedral staffer, is moving with his family to Connecticut where Dr. Samantha Slaubaugh will begin post-doc work at Yale University. Steven began his tenure on staff just before the pandemic struck. His extraordinary skill and adaptability were instrumental not only in keeping the Cathedral going while we were unable to meet in person and as we regathered with restrictions, but in actually strengthening our education and program life through and beyond that time. On the Slaubaugh's last Sunday with us, we will honor Steven - who also happens to be a former baseball player and continues to be a devoted fan.

It makes sense, then, that on the afternoon of Sunday, June 25, we will head down the street to Four Winds Field to watch the South Bend Cubs take on the Fort Wayne Tin Caps. Tickets are just $13 each. We purchased a block of 60 tickets, 31 of which are still available as of this writing. Se the ad below for ordering information.

So come on out on Sunday, June 25 for a great day of remembering, celebrating, and cheering!

Summer Camp Week!
The Diocese of Northern Indiana annual summer camp program takes place this week at Camp Alexander Mack in Milford, Indiana. Please pray for a fun- and faith-filled week down on the shores of Lake Waubee for all of the children and staff. As in years past, a whole lot of Cathedral folks are involved, so please keep them all in your prayers!

Blessings,
Brian

Slaubaugh Farewell Fund

I will say more about the import and impact of Steven Slaubaugh's ministry at the Cathedral in the coming weeks, not to mention the joy and blessing of having Samantha, Eliza, and Rey in the Cathedral community. Please join Tamisyn and me in sharing and outward and visible sign of our love and appreciation by making a gift to the Slaubaugh Farewell Fund, which we will present to Steven on Sunday, June 25. You may give by cash or check on Sundays between now and then, or through Givelify. Thank you so much!

Service Opportunities

Episcopal Church Booth at South Bend Pride Festival

Area Episcopal Churches are sponsoring a booth at South Bend's Pride Festival. The festival takes place on Saturday, June 17 at Potawatomi Park from 11 am - 5 pm. We will have some literature about the Episcopal Church, plus water bottle stickers to give away.

Anyone interested in helping staff the booth should contact Fr. Brian at dean@stjamessouthbend.org to sign up. We are asking volunteers to take a two-hour shift from 11 am - 1 pm, 1 pm - 3 pm, or 3 pm - 5 pm.

Another tasty opportunity to do good from Steven Mast's colleague
(and SOTB volunteer) Dr. Terri Suico:

Hi friends! After an unexpected hiatus, I'm hosting a Bakers Against Racism sale this month and will be donating 100% of sales to the Almazai Family. The Almazais came to the United States last year after fleeing Afghanistan and living in several refugee camps. They are now settling into their lives in South Bend. All proceeds from this sale will go towards helping with unexpected costs, including some emergency dental work.

Pre-orders start on Sunday, June 11 and will be open until 4:00 pm Wednesday, June 14. The official dates for pick-up and delivery will be June 17 and 18 (in time for Father's Day), feel free to request a different date if needed. The offerings this time are a mix of some past favorites (including sugar cookie bars, gluten-free peanut butter cookies, pralines, and toffee) and some new items (sourdough chocolate chip cookies and Almond Joy clusters).

If you're interested in ordering, please leave a comment below, and I will email you the form on Sunday, June 11. Thanks for your support, and let me know if you have any questions!

A New Album from John Liberatore
in collaboration with Zohn Collective

I could not be happier to say that my new CD Catch Somewhere was released on June 2, with New Focus Recordings.

A collaboration with Zohn Collective, the album features some of the most profoundly musical and generous people I know, including flautist Molly Barth, guitarist Dieter Hennings, tenor Zach Finkelstein, pianist (and harpsichordist!) Daniel Pesca, percussionist Paul Vaillancourt, and conductor Tim Weiss, playing four pieces of mine from 2011 to the present.

I would be sincerely grateful if you consider purchasing the album at this link:
