Imagining Our Future
Several teams formed by the Cathedral Chapter have been at work for awhile now considering our mission, ministry, values, and short- and long-term plans. Here’s what coming up as we continue these exciting conversations.
Sunday, June 4
The congregation is invited to tour the entire Cathedral physical plant to see and respond to all of our spaces and help imagine their potential. Walk-throughs at 9:15 am and 11:45 am.
Tuesday, June 20
Reports to Chapter from Gather & Grow, Church Buildings for Collaborative Partnerships, and Five-Year Plan teams at 5:30 pm.
Speak Out
Let’s talk about Roger for a minute. Roger is our protester. He showed up a week after Pete & Chasten Buttigieg were married at the Cathedral in June of 2018 and, more or less, has been here every Sunday since. So long as he remains peaceful and does not obstruct anyone from accessing the Cathedral, Roger is within his rights to picket on a public sidewalk. We have learned that he will not engage you unless you engage him, which I cannot discourage strongly enough because what will ensue tends more towards diatribe than conversation. Roger disagrees with us, and we with him. That said, if you greet him kindly, he will return your greeting. Just please, for the love of all things holy, don’t engage him on “the issue.”
Those who attend the Cathedral understand that Roger is protesting our expansive view on marriage. Those passing by on the street, however, who know little or nothing about the Episcopal Church, may believe he speaks for us, particularly since his is the only “voice” being heard outside our front door. This is one of the reasons that the Cathedral Chapter elected to display the Pride Progress flag at the church entrance. In so doing, we join many other churches – including many Episcopal churches around the country and several in our own diocese – in making our voice of welcome heard clearly.
Blessings,
Brian

Adult Forum: Emerging Technologies and the Future of The Church
Children's Formation | This Sunday, May 21 at 9:15 am
This Sunday is, somehow, our last Sunday formation hour of the Spring! It's been such a wonderful year for Children's Ministry at CSJ. We give thanks to God for all of our volunteers for their time and the gift of their guidance in these classrooms. And we thank God for each and everyone of our children who participated in these classrooms - the energy, joy, and curiosity they bring to the classroom reveal the deep spirituality they already have, and which we can all learn from in our own journeys.
In preparation for Pentecost Sunday (May 28), we will do a short story time on Pentecost and what it'a all about, followed by making a Holy Spirit mosaic out of Sidewalk chalk in front of the church.
Children - please join us for this last formation gathering of the Spring!
Adult Forum: Series Wrap-Up
This Sunday, May 21 at 9:15 am
So, are you all futurists, yet? Can you spot the technological trends of now and extrapolate what might happen in ministry contexts in 5, 10, 20, years?
How do we connect our old, beautiful traditions in the Episcopal Church with the new, emerging tools of technology? How might these tools augment, or diminish, our mission to faithfully share the good news of Jesus even more expansively?
Have you realized I'm speaking in questions, yet? Well, that's because it's very possible that we still have more questions than answers on how emerging technologies are going to affect our life and ministry in the years to come. But, with clarity of mission and purpose, the Church has the opportunity to discern how/if we can use these tools to live out our Baptismal Covenant.
Join us this Sunday as we wrap up this series, and wrap up the Spring of Faith Formation at Saint James. Adult Forum takes place in the Conference Room at 9:15 am.
