The Dean's List

Deacon Anne Traveling
Deacon Anne Wietstock departs for Syracuse, New York this evening to be with her brother, Jim, and sister-in-law, Betsy, as Jim undergoes triple bypass surgery this coming week. Please pray, first and foremost, for a good surgical outcome and recovery for Jim. Please pray also for his wife, Betsy, and for Deacon Anne and the entire Mostrom family. Deacon Anne's stay in New York is open-ended at this point, so prayers, dinner invitations, and other acts of kindness for Steve Wietstock might also be appreciated.

An Update from the Grantz House
Let's begin with a hearty work of thanks to the Cathedral community, family, and friends for all of the prayer and support that has surrounded us over the past three weeks. As you may be aware, in addition to Tamisyn's fall three weeks ago and subsequent surgery two weeks ago, last Friday we had to make a heart-breaking decision to allow our beloved 9-year-old Newfie, Fezzik, to cross the Rainbow Bridge.

Today, however, things are looking better. Earlier this week a nurse at Tamisyn's surgeon's office removed the big fluffy cast guarding Tamisyn's right heel and put her back in an air cast, which has the distinct advantage of being removable for bathing. The nurse also gave us the paperwork for a temporary handicap parking tag, which we got from a very pleasant and sympathetic BMV employee yesterday. Our first stop with the new blue hang tag was Alick's Home Medical where, in addition to having a warm and wonderful conversation with Mrs. Alick, we picked up a kneeling scooter which allows Tamisyn a far greater measure of independent mobility in our house. Physically, she is now managing pain only with extra strength Tylenol and just generally feeling better. Her post-op appointment with the surgeon is scheduled for next Friday morning, which will hopefully allow her to progress to physical therapy and some weight-bearing for her wrist, which will - again - improve her overall mobility, which will in turn allow me to be out of the house for longer stretches of time. She will not be able to bear weight on her right foot until the week after Thanksgiving at the earliest, and we'll see how long after that she gets the go-ahead to resume driving.

In the meantime, we continue to be filled with gratitude for many things, not the least of which are the generosity of time, culinary talent, and goodwill of many. Thank you.

Arrangements for Carolyn Campbell
Carolyn Campbell, who some time ago attended the Cathedral with her second husband, Hovie, died last Friday, October 13 after living with dementia for several years. May her soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace, and may light perpetual shine upon her.

Visitation for Carolyn will take place at Palmer Funeral Home's Bubb Chapel at 3910 North Main Street in Mishawaka from 2 pm - 4 pm this coming Friday, October 27. Her funeral service will begin at 4 pm, also at Bubb Chapel. All are welcome.

Gather & Grow
The Cathedral Finance Committee & Cathedral Chapter have pressed "go" on the next phase of development of the Cathedral's physical plant. The first step is to convene the Gather & Grow Committee - which will happen this coming Wednesday - to define the scope of the project. Very soon thereafter, we will announce a date and time for a mini-charrette at which our architect, Joe Dzierla, will present the current drawings for an addition to house an elevator, and the Gather & Grow committee will solicit input about that particular project along with other priorities addressing accessibility and functionality. Watch for meeting information!

Kitchen Upgrades
Through the Church Buildings for Collaborative Partnerships program we participated in last year, Team Cathedral zeroed in on replacing some of our kitchen appliances as key to both improved parish hospitality and fund-raising AND increased outreach ministry possibilities. To that end, we applied for a grant to replace our ten-burner, double-oven range with a six-burner single oven range and a five-rack, free-standing oven. We would also like to replace the dishwasher, which will be the subject of another grant request coming up at the beginning of 2024. Neither grant will cover the entire cost of these appliances, but it is a good beginning. Please pray for generous grant-givers.

Blessings,
Brian

Upcoming Events

Since 1898, volunteers of the Seamen’s Church Institute have knitted, collected, packed, and distributed gifts to mariners who were miles away from home during the holidays. Today, for seafarers calling on the Port Newark and Elizabeth in New Jersey, the gift consists of two hand-knitted garments, a Christmas card, and information on SCI’s services for mariners along with toiletries like hand lotion, lip balm, and toothbrushes, and individually-packaged candy or snacks. The items for the seafarers’ gifts are housed in an individual hand-sewn ditty bag, and they are delivered to the ships by SCI chaplains from the Monday before Thanksgiving through Epiphany on January 6. Mariners working on U.S. inland rivers receive a box for each boat containing handmade Christmas cards and a knit for each mariner.

Items for the contents for Christmas at Sea Ditty Bags

“Seafarers each receive a hand-sewn ditty bag housing two handmade knit gifts and a signed  Christmas card, along with an assortment of donated toiletries, fun games, and individually packaged  snacks or candy. If the needleworker includes a note with their knit gift, that would also be packed  with the knits. These items go fast when we are packing. Travel or sample size donations of  new products are greatly appreciated!” - Christmas at Sea
