The Dean's List

Update from the Grantz House
Tamisyn's right wrist was surgically repaired this past Thursday which - in the days of miracle and wonder - was an outpatient procedure. Her orthopedic surgeon opted not to operate on her heel, surmising that the benefits of surgery would be negligible compared to the potential risks. Our post-op goal since coming home has been pain management, which involves a variety of pain medications and a spreadsheet. As of this writing (Saturday afternoon), she has stayed ahead of the pain and is feeling much better overall. Mobility continues to be the issue; she cannot bear weight on either her right wrist or her right foot, so she relies on another person (namely, me) to transfer her to and from wheelchairs, resting places, and comfort facilities. This will be the case at least until her follow-up appointment on the last Friday in October.

This has a short-term impact on how I will have to approach my work at the Cathedral. Since she can't be alone for more than a few hours, I will be working from home as much as possible and seeking volunteers to stay with her for a few hours a couple of days a week so I can do things like celebrate the Eucharist on Fridays and Sundays, attend essential meetings, and occasionally remind the Cathedral staff what I look like.

Additionally, Erica Vitale has very kindly set up a Meal Train so that Tamisyn and I do not have to worry about meal preparation a couple of nights per week. We have requested meals on Sunday and Tuesday evenings through November 14. The link to the Meal Train website is here.

Our long-time friends Anne & Michael Reardon drove out from Pennsylvania to help out this weekend, so I will be in church tomorrow as scheduled. I look forward to seeing you!

Blessings,
Brian

Since 1898, volunteers of the Seamen’s Church Institute have knitted, collected, packed, and distributed gifts to mariners who were miles away from home during the holidays. Today, for seafarers calling on the Port Newark and Elizabeth in New Jersey, the gift consists of two hand-knitted garments, a Christmas card, and information on SCI’s services for mariners along with toiletries like hand lotion, lip balm, and toothbrushes, and individually-packaged candy or snacks. The items for the seafarers’ gifts are housed in an individual hand-sewn ditty bag, and they are delivered to the ships by SCI chaplains from the Monday before Thanksgiving through Epiphany on January 6. Mariners working on U.S. inland rivers receive a box for each boat containing handmade Christmas cards and a knit for each mariner.

Items for the contents for Christmas at Sea Ditty Bags

“Seafarers each receive a hand-sewn ditty bag housing two handmade knit gifts and a signed  Christmas card, along with an assortment of donated toiletries, fun games, and individually packaged  snacks or candy. If the needleworker includes a note with their knit gift, that would also be packed  with the knits. These items go fast when we are packing. Travel or sample size donations of  new products are greatly appreciated!” - Christmas at Sea
