Diocesan Anti-Racism Reading Group

Out of the 2016 Trinity Institute - Listen For a Change: Sacred Conversations on Racial Justice -- arose the desire for a reading group for people across the diocese who are interested in matters of racial justice.

Join your fellow Episcopalians as we take our concern for Racial Reconciliation to the movies! During February and March, the Diocesan Anti-Racism Reading Group will be discussing a variety of films about race relations in America. Look for later viewings of Dear White People (March 9 at the Cathedral of St. James, time TBA). We invite anyone who is interested to join us.

Catechumenal Class

Focus on Faith

Wednesday Evenings at 6:00 pm

The word catechumen (kat-a-KYOO-men) means listener. From the earliest days of the Church, catechumens were those new to the faith who were engaged in deliberate exploration of core teachings Christianity and the wonder of God’s presence and call in their lives. In the ancient church, catechumenal processes could be as long as three years. Revival of the catechumenate through the Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) in the latter half of the 20th century generally focused on processes that corresponded with one academic year. While that may be ideal, we’re going to start more humbly at the Cathedral of Saint James with a short 15 week course.

Who should come? Catechumenal processes were intended for those preparing for baptism, but in our context it also works for those preparing for Confirmation, the Renewal of Baptismal Vows, or any older teenager or adult who is interested in listening and discerning. This would also be a good opportunity for those interested in leading our catechumenal process in the future to become involved.

We will meet on the following Wednesdays:

  • Mar 15 Will You Persevere?
  • Mar 22 Will You Proclaim?
  • Mar 29 Will You Seek?
  • Apr 5 Will You Strive?
  • Apr 19 Hope
  • Apr 12 Passion
  • Apr 26 Call

Those who can come for Holy Eucharist are encouraged to do so. The start time for the Eucharist is being moved up to 5:15 pm. Our hope is to provide a simple carry-in soup and bread supper at 5:45 pm. Our conversation on the evening’s topic will begin shortly after 6 pm.

A sign-up sheet has been placed on the table at the back of the Cathedral, or you may send an email to Fr. Brian at to ask questions or register. Please note: While our teenagers are absolutely invited to participate in this process, their Confirmation preparation group will continue.
